Just plain stupid

If they ever finish San Jacinto Plaza we will witness another failure.  According to the city’s web site:

Renovations include; a 50-square-foot shade structure to protect Luis Jimenez’ Los Lagartos sculpture…

Take a look at the shade the canopy was providing at 1:30 in the afternoon of January 3, 2016:

Its probably fair to assume that the sculpture will be placed in the circle directly under the canopy.  The mid-day sun evidently does not know how to read engineering drawings.

We’ve paid $638,000 to the designers and are about to end up with a canopy that will not protect the sculpture from the afternoon sun.

We deserve better

It will work perfectly on the first day of summer at noon. Stop complaining and just enjoy the wonder that is San Jacinto Plaza. a Mecca for tourists and locals alike.

  2. Pretty much what we were expecting, I believe. I remember when there were real alligators at San Jacinto. And, guess what else? I do not recall there being much shade for them (other than perhaps natural shade from, like a real tree, or trees).

The real problem with the city and its contractors is that they all sit in their office and engineer without ever visiting the field and have NO field experience!

The so-called shade structure was never really about protecting anything. It and other elements of the project never looked at from a cost/benefit perspective. It was all about running up the total cost of the project for the benefit of the parties involved, including the California-based design firm. The bigger the project, the more elements, the more they and others would make. They achieved that part because the cost of the project has soared.

The midday sun changes throughout the year. Maybe they ought to have made it a movable canopy. On second thoght, nah. It would delay the project another 2 years.

I think I can see those Special, one of a kind. . . only available from Germany hand-made cables, holding the shade.

They look fantastic. Now I know why they HAD to be made and shipped from Germany. Real steel cables !

I think the pigeons will like them too. AND the shade.
If I were a pigeon, I’d want to sit on top of that shade cause it looks so comfortable to just sit there and . . . relax . . . and take a poop on the people below.

actually part of the problem was MCAD who selected expensive elements…and Courtney’s constant interference didn’t help
