At the Tuesday, September 19, 2017 city council meeting representative Noe moved to delete item 15.2 from the regular agenda based upon advice from the city attorney.
His motion was immediately seconded without discussion.
The agenda item:
While it is conceivable that passing such a resolution might cause legal complications for the city, we don’t see how having a discussion about it would.
Deleting the item was a blatant effort to keep the demolition opponents from having an opportunity to speak.
It seems that we have now reached a point where council not only does what it wants but it refuses to hear from the public.
Without regard as to where you stand on the issue, it seems that people should be allowed to express their opinions.

One of Mayor Dee Margo’s first public moves during the first City Hall meeting with the new crew was to attempt to cut speakers times from three minutes to one.
And to limit public comment to one hour every two weeks. Done.
And to assign one person to speak for five people on a topic they all want to address.
Mayor Margo opposes opposition. All he wants is to be surrounded by yes people and he is 7/8 there in City Council.
He needs to be called out and confronted publicly ever available chance.

And, let’s not forget that this style has been prevalent ever since we abandoned the Strong Mayor form of City government. Who cares what the taxpayers care? They don’t bother to vote, so we’ll just do whatever the hell we want.

If the Mayor is 7/8 on CC that is significant. Opposition in El Paso is rarely a majority movement.

The reasons this happens, the reasons THEY get away with treating US this way, is because THEY know that WE “stupid , ignorant peons” will do nothing. How many VOTES do WE have?? Where are the PROTESTS in El Paso? Where do OUR RIGHTS begin?? Don’t these arrogant, disrespectful, incapable POLITICIANS offend US?? THEY need to remember that THEY were hired by US, THEY work for US. WE need to tell THEM, impress upon THEM. And WE need to start a RECALL drive on everyone of THEM that ignores US, disrespects US, INCAPABLE, refuses to REPRESENT US. Starting with the MAYOR and every one of THEM that thinks THEY are the POWER over US. All that THEY represent is what THEY can take from US and how THEY can fill their pockets from Mountain Star Sports, the RICH ELITE of El Paso when THEY do what THEY are told by these people. THEY don’t care about “Improving” El Paso. THEY only care about how much MONEY goes in their pockets on the DEALS, their SCAMS on US.

(And discuss / go over these ideas in their minds ) The City Council only relies on a few people to show up and talk about problems is their ONLY SOURCE of “incoming Information” ???

Oracle, they all read these blogs and see the same 5 or 10 posters all the time and conclude correctly that nobody important – like a voting majority – gives a shit.

Exactly. Even if the comments here are those of a majority, city officials still don’t care because the only opinions that matter to them are those of a few select individuals who make political and charitable contributions with one hand while grabbing tax breaks and subsidies with their other hand.

Disagree. My opinions on this and the other boards are rarely “majority.” The majority of people voted for the finance package that created the AAA stadium and they voted for the QoL bond and the EPISD bond. I didn’t.
The majority of people don’t know WTF is happening and should listen more closely to me as I am always right but never majority.

If I could afford it, I would just pour cash into the fucking CC like Paul and Woody do. Then my opinions would be carried out and be a de facto majority, no matter what the rest of you think.

Let us not forget that our ‘leaders’ don’t give a big rat turd for citizen input. Everything that costs money has already been determined in the ‘back room’, that 3 minute open time for a citizens input (takes longer to take a crap, for God’s sake) is just a bread crumb to appease the ankle biters.

Seems your rehash of the procedure or the procedure itself may have been done incorrectly. Parliamentary procedure would start with a motion, then a second, then discussion, then a vote. You state a motion was made, then seconded without discussion? Did you mean there might have been discussion before the second? Or did you mean made, seconded, no discussion, and passed by majority vote?

Just to set the record straight. Margo was right. There is nothing in the Texas Civil Code that require a political entity like the city have a public speech section. He could actually, without a vote, decide to scrap the citizens open mic perio.

Maybe they opponents of the arena would have been allowed to speak if they knew the meaning of civil discourse. Several weeks ago, they were an embarrassment to themselves and to our city. Comment, discuss, argue. This is all welcome. But yelling, swearing, calling names and flinging accusations is not productive.
