Our westside district representative is even more capable than we thought.
He has decided that he wants to host an event called “Sunday Morning Kern Place Art & Farmers Market” and he needs city council’s approval.
This is the resolution that he placed on council’s agenda:
Ignoring the grammatical errors we can see that this one event “creates an environment conducive to strong sustainable economic development”.
Wow!
The event also “enhances and sustains El Paso’s infrastructure network”.
It “sets the standard for a safe and secure city”.
Baloney! Talk about a puffed up sense of self importance.

I’d have to agree, Brutus. How the hell can he expect to accomplish all of that in that tiny space, and why bother when there is already a real Farmers’ Market operating downtown?

OH but it will be held under the new Kern Place arch, celebrating the “Heritage Corridor” constituted by Cincinnati between Mesa and Stanton! (Apparently a block that has been an “entertainment district” for maybe twenty years can be considered “Heritage” but the historic district of Duranguito is just junk that should be demolished.) If you haven’t checked this out, go take a look – you might say it’s the definition of absurdity. Meantime, $1000 is just pocket change for this Council, can’t imagine they won’t approve.

Give it a try and let’s see what this $1K does. If it fails we will know, if it works and is something that can be sustained by buyers’ and sellers that would certainly be great.
Thought I’m not always in agreement with what this Westside city rep does, especially with wanting to extend the street car line into Juarez, certainly not going to shit my pants over this idea.
If some people are so upset with this guy, why not initiate a recall?

The bottom line is that this should be done by private interests, not subsidized by taxpayers. Ardavino’s has done one of these on Sundays for years because it increases restaurant traffic. Our local officials are so convinced they have to subsidize economic development they are spending money on stuff a competitive market has happening on its own. Or maybe it is a handout to a friend who wants to drink at the public trough. Either way it needs to stop.

Like I said, I’m not going to ‘shit my pants’ over $1k. But since you said: “Either way it needs to stop,” well it certainly seems one way to do it is to consider a recall.

The dollar amount is not the issue. The issue is the city once again picking and choosing winners, subsidizing certain businesses and not others. Are they going to give $1,000 to every strip mall for promotional events? If the Kern Place merchants aren’t willing to pool their money and come up with $1,000, this event should not happen.
It’s no coincidence that this event is on the street car route and that Svarzbein was behind the street cars.
