Well it appears that the city does not think that city staff or the Tax Increment Reinvestment Boards have the experience to manage the money that they are carving out of the tax base.

Sadly government in El Paso has been extremely corrupt for some time. Eventually time will allow the truth to surface. In all oppressive systems something will give, the people here could turn out to Vote. Until then, I’ve got this little box to comment in.

Tax Increment Reinvestment Zones and Public Improvement Districts are real estate developer schemes. If you look at Pettit’s track record, he is all about real estate development and those other schemes called “public/private” partnerships. Buckle up. There are going to be more free rides at your expense. The areas outside of those zones and districts are going to see reduced services and will decay. It’s going to be ugly. Pettit is just one more carpetbagger taking hundreds of thousands of dollars out of El Paso.

City disinvestment via TIRZ is just another scheme to create blight and use it as an excuse to redevelop targeted areas.

Just the opposite. It is to manipulate the distribution of tax dollars and make sure that certain people’s tax dollars are not shared with other areas of the city. Blight in certain areas will be a result, but the schemers do not care about areas other than those where they live or do business.

If you’ve ever served on a City Board (including a TIRZ) you would agree that the majority of El Pasoans appointed to serve on those boards are barely qualified to pour water out of a boot. They are appointed by Council members and their main qualification seems to be “supporter.” City business is serious and complicated and deserves management by those who understand the multitude of issues involved.
