As part of the agreement with Great Wolf the city actually requires them to do certain things, like this:
Evidently the city will get 100 complimentary room nights each year.
It will be interesting to see who gets to use them.

In theory, those rooms should be used by Destination El Paso to comp convention and event organizer rooms when they come here to check out El Paso for their event. That is a common practice to incentivize these folks to check out EP. But I agee, it would be interesting to see who really uses them.

So, if I am visiting from Podunk, OH, and I want to check out the city for a possible future “event,” I’d choose to stay way the hell over on the west side of a city whose elected representatives told its taxpaying citizens that a minor league ball park *must* be downtown, and that we need arenas and downtown revitalization?? I guess I fail to see any point to any of this BS.

If you are an event organizer from Podunk and you arrange a trip through Destination El Paso, you will be open to staying in whatever free room is offered and typically a representative from the convention and tourism board handles all transportation among venues so driving around is a non-issue.

Well the Mayor,, City Council, politicians, City Manager, D.A., of course, get the rooms, benefits. All a part of the pay off, bribes, kick back “Package”. A “Reward” for shafting the people, taxpayers, home owners, of El Taxo with another SCAM, MILLIONS, BILLIONS$$$ more in debt.

It is standard practice for hotels and resorts to comp rooms for event planners doing site surveys. If the city thinks they won some great negotiating point, they’re wrong as usual.

The key point of difference is this gives Destination El Paso some choice in a room comp decision that may or may not entirely benefit Wolf Lodge. Hotels typically only comp on their own when the event is centered on their hotel. It’s standard verbiage so not a great victory and given the sense of entitlement our local officials have will probably get misused, but it actually could be used as a tourism building tool.

If you consider the the cost of the land and the tax subsidies, those room reservations are anything but free. The cost is more than $20,000 per room night. If we have to cough up the $40,000,000 they hope to get from the State of Texas, the cost will be more than $60,000 per night.

“I wonder who will get to use them….” is pure BS. The same conversation went on about the City’s less-than-ideal box for Chihuahua games. If you’re trying to create controversy by making your readers think that these comp days will be for the use of City Reps or City staff, you probably succeeded . But if, by chance, you wanted to present the facts, you would have said that the rooms were obviously to be used to the promote the city. But you probably knew all this before you wrote your piece. Stick to reality and we’ll all be better off.

Stick to reality, you say? The reality is that Wolf is private, for-profit venture that will enrich a few, while costing taxpayers tens of millions of dollars. All but a handful of taxpayers would be better off without that deal. The other fact is that the ballpark is costing taxpayers more than originally stated. Only a few people are better off. That’s reality. But you probably knew all this before you commented.

NYC, Las Vegas, El Paso. Makes no difference. City councils are faced with such temptations that few in their position can resist. The road to good intentions . . . Is paved with graft and bribes.

But at least in Las Vegas they have the tax base, the TOURIST BILLIONS$$$ base to support, PAY for everything they do. But it’s not like the idiot politicians in El Taxo where THEY expect, FORCE a few thousand home owners, TAXPAYERS to pay for EVERYTHING they WANT. Whatever they BUILD in Vegas, people will come. In El Taxo the corrupt politicos , want, build, give away everything the MILLIONAIRES, BILLIONAIRES ask them to, and then FORCE taxpayers to pay for it. What “business, event” in El Taxo is or ever will be a money making venture? What “business, adventure” the politicos are “vested” in will ever return ANY money to the TAXPAYERS or will ever be paid for? The town of El Taxo is BILLIONS$$$ in debt, increasing everyday, will never be PAID. Standing on a banana peel, one slide away from bankruptcy.

Most of what gets built in Las Vegas is privately funded anyway. There are some amenities that are public, but compared to the casinos and hotels, it is minor. Plus, the bulk of the tax burden in that town is not on the backs of the homeowner.
