El Salvador wants to have a Consulate here? Wow. Gee, I’d say that might be considered a sign of a real city! That actually could be one of the many things we lack that other real cities have! International recognition can’t be such a bad thing. And, here Brutus and Anonymous want to denigrate this possibility because of what, exactly? Tornillo detention center drives the need for an El Salvador consulate harassing US attempts to expeditiously return a mob of folks falsely claiming amnesty to game our system. Apparently, El Salvador wants to get in on that strategy and is now putting in a consulate to ensure “rights” of its future remittance senders.
Help me understand. The city is leasing space at market rates from Paul Foster for the economic development offices. They are buying a building and renovating it for bathrooms to the tune of $1.4 million for the plaza. How exactly is it that they have vacant property they feel they can lease at below market rates to anyone? If El Salvador was paying market rates, I’d be good with it. I’d also be good with the city occupying the space they own instead of continually tying down more at taxpayer expense.
Because the City politicians are just one big Cartel, Mafia, Criminal Empire ripping off, using US “Stupid, ignorant peons” in El Taxo?? Just a guess..
I agree that this is a bad deal. Anytime the City of El Paso mentions the word “partnership,” it’s a bad deal for taxpayers and a good deal for someone else. But unless you know something you’re not sharing, tying this to the caravans is a dog whistle. If you’re going to speculate that it is intended to help the caravans, explain how you think it’s going to help the caravans.
What is the business reason for El Salvador to establish a consulate here otherwise? The main reason you put in a consulate is to help your own citizens conduct business or to support the issuance of documentation to folks wishing to do business in your country. Do we have a mob of El Paso businesses suddenly needing document processing to support their transit and investments in El Salvador? If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it is probably a duck.
Again, the primary purpose of a consulate is to issue documents related the transit of people. Product importation doesn’t need a consulate. The only business reason is either to service its own expat citizens or facilitate visa issuance to folks going to El Salvador. And generally consulates focused on folks travelling to their country locate in the larger cities (Dallas, Chicago, NY, LA, SF) as part of a regional support strategy. The only reason to look at El Paso would be if they expected to be supporting large groups of their citizens in this area. Like say for instance, in the Tornillo holding facility.
We’re going to get an increase in the number of people from El Salvador living in El Paso. Trump can waste his time and our money trying to stop it, but he is just wasting time. Since they’re going to be here, it’s sensible for the government of El Salvador to have a consulate here.
