A simple solution?

I heard an idea that I liked the other evening.

The smart phone manufactures should change their phones so that if it is moving faster than a set speed (5 miles per hour?) the keyboard should be disabled.

How many lives would that save?

We deserve better

That capability already exists, has for awhile. What about people who are on a bus, Lyft, Uber or otherwise are not driving?

There is something to be said for personal responsibility. When I am driving I simply don’t read or send texts. As such, I do not anticipate dying from a text-related accident.

Much like not running and jumping or using a pogo stick on the way to board a helicopter, sometimes people have to adjust their behavior to suit the situation, and failing to do so isn’t the fault of society or culture.

Reading a text walking down a sidewalk is an at-your-own-risk endeavor. If you fall into a manhole or walk into traffic it would be a result of your poor judgement and/or inability to delay gratification. That doesn’t put the onus on everyone else to have to adjust their behavior in an attempt to save you from your own decisions.

Society cannot be expected to “save” people from themselves, this directly opens a door to eventual abuse and even tyranny.

I’ve been tailgated twice here, both times by women on their phone. The last one didn’t even stop the conversation; just kept talking as we shared insurance info.

Some problems don’t have a solution.
