This is what the bond issue will look like on the ballot:
Do they know what they are going to build?
They have a list of facilities but they put this footnote on each slide:
Amounts listed are preliminary estimates subject to change. Actual use of any approved bond funds
will be determined by subsequent action by City Council.
Do they know how much each building will cost?
No, they have not gone out to bid–they are just guessing. Many of us can remember how that worked out with the ballpark/city hall move.
Can someone send us a graphic of a blank check?

This is what happens when politicians and school administrators discover they can sway enough voters to get what they want. This is almost the same amount they asked for in 2012 with the so-called quality of life initiative. in reality they need money in the general fund to cover what they have to spend in interest on past borrowing.
the city of el paso is rapidly but surely heading towards bankruptcy, the will of the people be damned. it doesn’t take many votes to get anything passed in this town.
on another note, I have had at least forty calls in the last three years from the local minor league baseball team marketing arm asking if I am willing to buy tickets to then give my customers. what happened to sold out stadium seating and bringing lots of money to el paso? next they will be giving tickets to children in school begging people to come to the games, just like they used to with the diablos. we paid for the diablos stadium, too. then tore it down.

Amazingly, I agree with the unknown person’s comments. We vote by mail, and already voted against this latest effort to piss away our tax dollars.

I agree also. But I think there is more to consider. Joyce Wilson became City Manager in 2005. The quality of life bond was on the ballot in 2012. Now we have the Public Safety Bond. Seems like the CM would have known about the public safety needs by 2012. But instead we got the QOL Bond. Why? Now check the City Council agenda of Sept. 16, Item 2, Infrastructure Fund part of 2020 Capital Improvement Plan, see pdf attachment, note $6.7 million in facilities in need of funding, see lots of specific examples of needs. This is quite a huge amount of deferred maintenance and really serious needs. Instead we are hoping to boost El Paso’s economy with “economic incentives” while city facilities are in really bad shape.

The bottom line is that if you read the footnote, the mayor and city council could decided not to even use these monies for law enforcement. They could divert the funds to the arena, ballpark improvements, or any other pet project that they and their special interest puppeteers choose to fund. Few voters will know about the footnote.

And let’s not forget local stations are saying this bond will increase taxes by $24 per $100k of valuation per year for the next six years. At least the tax increase is mentioned this time around. Vote no.

Just more lawyer speak we need to be careful with. Hopefully people with read and vote no to stop the travesty we call city council.

Most voters will be unaware of the footnote. If special interest groups mount pro-bond campaigns, the footnote will not be a part of their message.

And let us not forget the downtown arena! Can’t wait for the Certificate of Obligation to come out on that one. As we used to say in the military BOHICA (bend over here it comes again). Don’t you think people need to wise up to what the city and city council members are doing to us.
