I believe that it deserves some attention.
The purpose of education is not to produce a workforce. It is to create educated, responsible citizens capable of thinking for themselves.
The Duluth News Tribune printed this the other day:
Communism is soaring in popularity. More than one-in-three millennials view communism favorably. So does nearly 30% of Generation Z. Millennials’ support for communism grew by nearly 10 percentage points over the past year.

That would be the logical consequence of having socialist/communist teachers dominate the system. Unions are a socialist/communist construct. Research them if you think they are as American as apple pie. Teachers across the country have spent decades teaching children that they are victims of society and the world owes them something.
There is a reason Che Guevara t-shirts are so popular with students. Too bad they didn’t get to meet him, he was fond of shooting “privileged” students in the back of the head. You can research that, too.
Someone give me a valid reason for teacher unions to exist in America.
Someone give me a valid reason to continue tolerating the very overt teaching of socialist/communist dogma in public schools and universities.

Jesus Christ himself espoused a way of life that could best be described as ‘communist.’ As for “the very overt teaching of socialist/communist dogma in public schools and universities?” I would be interested in your rationale, and/or any proof you might have for such an outlandish statement.

Only a communist brings up how famous, historical figures are also communists. Your choosing to believe Jesus Christ espoused communism is outlandish. You should leave El Paso and move to Cuba or Venezuela, or stay and just be a hypocrite.
It is amazing the number of communists who refuse to actually live in communist countries.

I don’t recall Jesus Christ proposing a model for government. He did however support individual decisions to provide care for one’s neighbor.

The problem is that people believe we’re living in a capitalist society, when really we’re living in a corporatist/borderline fascist society. And the current social structure is failing most of us.

I don’t think the world has ever seen an ideal Communist state like the way Marx described that society would eventually evolve. What we did see during the 20th century were several regimes that tried to fast forward past the proletariate’s struggle and go directly to a workers’ utopia. None worked out. In each case the utopia seemed to have formed into a dystopia instead at the hands of a greedy, even if well intended, elite who wound up killing their opponents and keeping the fruits of labor for themselves and still went bankrupt. This is what our young colleagues seem to not appreciate. Maybe they should spend a little more time on Federalist 51 or even reading Animal Farm? Maybe these are relics of Cold War curriculum?

The problem with our educational system is that it produces kids who believe they are unique individuals who should follow their own paths. Some kids can do that well. Most kids are better off with discipline and a focus on skills that will either prepare them for college or a job. The mantra that education shouldn’t be producing a workforce puts us behind all the countries that believe education should be the path that helps kids live better than their parents. We’ve let the wealth of this nation blind us to common sense. A child with the skills to get a good job is better able to handle economic adversity than a child who believes the world owes him or her a living. But socialism depends on a population who feels they need government help to live well.

I choose not to base my values on the opinion of an economist who advocated for the abolishment of medical licenses and also opposed the war on drugs. You’re also dissing university professors while quoting one.
Equality and freedom go hand in hand; otherwise only a select group of people enjoy the benefits of freedom. It’s easy to say freedom is more important than equality when you’re not one of the people whose voting rights or other rights are being denied or stripped away. But then I guess the politicians doing those things believe they have the freedom to screw other people for their own benefit.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…” appears at the beginning of the second sentence of the Declaration of Independence, so I think it’s safe to say that the founders considered it more important than the people currently running our country.

That refers to equality under the law, i.e., the same law applies to all of us, a great idea. Not the 1% Jessie Smollet/ Jeffrie Epstein style just-for-us law.

Maybe they feel that way because they have seen how much the economic divide between the haves and the have-nots has grown in their lifetimes. Maybe they have seen how the minimum wage cannot afford rent in any major city in the US. Maybe they have seen how tax cuts benefit the rich. Maybe they have seen how purchasing power has not increased since the 70’s. Maybe they have seen how the expected lifespan has actually declined in their lifetimes. Maybe they see that they are the first generation to actually be expected to earn less than their parents.
Maybe they are the first generation that finally is not falling for that “American Dream” BS anymore.
Maybe they are smarter than you give them credit.

Maybe you are confusing the Bush and Obama “we love a service economy, let China build our products” years with the current Trump economy that has 3.5 % unemployment. El Paso is lagging but labor shortages are driving up wages just about everywhere else and growth and in manufacturing has created jobs where people can increase pay as they add skills. A lot of those jobs go unfilled because people don’t understand manufacturing careers anymore, but is a good path for folks who want more than a minimum wage retail job. Both sides of the aisle got us to the point where the middle class was being destroyed. Some elements of the GOP are smart enough to understand that Trump’s policies reverse that. The Dems are holding fast to the idea of big government, high taxes and a dependent population. And folks who grew up during the 16 years that prioritized a service economy with a lot of deadend minimum wage jobs may feel disenfranchised if they don’t look at increasing career options now. You aren’t supposed to support a family on minimum wage, you are supposed to acquire skills that improve your salary over time. This economy has those opportunities. It just may not be evident in EP, because a growing economy with new major corporate players would dilute the power of our big donors.

The Duluth newspaper chooses to view the world through a glass half empty lens. They could have said that two out of three millennials prefer capitalism over communism, but they instead chose to paint a negative picture of the younger generation. “Soaring” is also a bit of hyperbole.

The comments on this blog have become overly angry, divisive and hateful. A little peace and goodwill toward others would be a nice change of pace for the remainder of the holiday season. There were Christmas ceasefires in WWI and WWII. Maybe we should try it.

So does nearly 30% of Generation Z.” There literally are hundreds of blogs, papers, editorials, etc that use that EXACT PHRASE. This entire article is a right winged hit piece, copy and pasted over and over, designed to throw red meat to the Bubbas that live in a Fox News echo chamber.
Nice job Brutus for adding to the list of mindless right winged copy and paste bloggers.
It would not surprise me one bit if this entire story originated in a Russian Troll farm somewhere.
