On the news tonight they announced city hall and administrative offices will be closed from 23 December through 2 January. Does that mean those personnel will be on paid status?

The County as twice as many holidays as any private sector employer and even more than the Federal government. I haven’t looked at the City holiday schedule in a while. It would be interesting to see if they are asking employees to use sick leave or vacation balances (the way a private sector employer would do it) or just paying through the shutdown period. Cost to the taxpayer never seems to be on the minds of our local leaders unless it involves a recall petition or the cost of something enough voters fought to change a donor agenda.

When people get to vote for their own holidays, retirement, etc. I wonder why there is surprise at what they are willing to give themselves.
None of you must have been paying attention to what teachers get annually vs how many days they have to work. Yet they incessantly complain that they are underpaid.
The entire public sector has largely been taken over by people who get to determine what they get while also deciding what they have to do to get it, and if they can even be fired.

OK, enough already! The stupid here is choking y’all! First of all, El Paso City and County employees do NOT get as much paid time off as private sector or Federal employees! If offices are closed right now, I can guarantee you that some employees are off without pay because they have not accumulated PTO! City and County employees do not “vote” for their own holidays, and the very thought is ridiculous. As for an attack on teachers, obviously this coward has no clue as to what teachers do, how many hours they work, or the conditions under which they work. Y’all really need to inform yourselves before you go shooting yourselves in the feet! Shame on all of you, and go right on ahead and begin bad mouthing me in, one, two,….(btw, as Jerry K mentioned the other day, it is no wonder y’all choose to keep your identity private, and it has nothing to do with your employment, if you have such).

Sorry, John: http://www.epcounty.com/holidays.htm. 16 holidays. Most private sector employers give 7-9 paid holidays—Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are normally half day holidays. And the Federal government doesn’t give Juneteenth or Cesar Chavez Day. Most governments give 10-11 paid holidays. Post office gets 10.

I stand corrected. The County does now offer that many days off. It did not always do so. Maybe I don’t get it, but I simply never worked anywhere where I felt that my actions came under Big Brother scrutiny. Logically, there are some things that should not be uttered out loud by any of us, but that has nothing to do with where we work.

John, in today’s world employers do searches on potential candidates’ social media activity legally. Folks who are self-employed may also be scrutinized for political opinions, particularly as polarized as we are now. I agree that staying anonymous to simply insult folks doesn’t make sense. But, for folks who may be applying one way or another for jobs that get decided by folks associated with the government entities or large donors whose behavior gets criticized in this column, I can understand why anonymity makes sense. I do post using my real name on news channel FB links occasionally and back when I subscribed to the paper I used my real name in letters to the editor. At least one former member of City Council (who I don’t know) started visiting my linked in profile (I pay an extra fee there to see who searches for me because it can be an indicator of interest in my business posts in my Linked in feed). I found that very interesting, because I don’t do business with the city or in business circles that should have triggered that lookup. So, I stay anonymous now when I can. And just as an FYI, the county used to have 17 holidays and has had this level for close to a couple of decades now. It came to my attention when the newspaper ran an editorial on the Junteenth holiday back in the early 2000s. When I looked up the county holiday schedule back then I was blown away by how many they had.
