Everything they said about bringing the Chihuahuas minor league team here was true and now El Paso and everyone downtown is much, much wealthier as a result. Also, the people don’t have to pay anything extra for the stadium, just like they said, HOT taxes are working to pay all the associated stadium expenses.
The free police security provided to the stadium by EPPD also doesn’t cost the taxpayers anything.
The downtown businesses that have been displaced or otherwise suffered a decline in business due to the stadium are just a bunch of loser whiners. It is perfectly fine for government to back a single private enterprise to the exclusion of others.
The entire venture was a rousing success, and businesses have flocked to El Paso as a result, just like they said.
Time to build the Arena…

What a joke of a comment! The Ballpark is totally insolvent, and that $3.5 million HOT subsidy could be used for more productive purposes than AAA baseball. The project cost more than triple its original $50 million price tag, and we the people never even got to vote on whether we even wanted the damn thing. Thee is no data connecting that project to downtown revitalization. You are fooling nobody, least of all Brutus.

I’m going to take heat on this, but I think the two I’d name are President Trump and TXDOT. President Trump’s accomplishments include the China trade war which has actually increased manufacturing in Mexico and that benefits companies on this side of the border engaged in logistics plus folks who either live here and commute to Juarez or live in Juarez and shop here. USMCA will help level our playing field a little and keep more business here, particularly when China tariffs end. The stock market rise has helped anyone with a 401k or IRA. President Trump also ended the gaming of our asylum system that had illegal aliens breaching our local border in groups of several hundred at a time and exploiting kids to become family units. Congress could have acted to reform our immigration system but instead preferred to let it be a headline-grabbing political football. While the groups that make money off this situation don’t like the outcome, I think the end of the surge was good for EP because at one point the drain on ICE resources was so bad that it was hurting the ability of manufacturers to ship out of Juarez which has a negative impact on EP revenue. Long bridge waits were also discouraging shopping commutes. And if I sound callous it is because what really seem to cut the surge, was Mexico cracking down on the bank accounts of activists who were recruiting migrant groups. They finally did that after Trump threatened tariffs. If the problems incentivizing migration were as pervasive as these groups want us to believe, people would still be forming caravans. Take the ads and the activists out of the mix and suddenly folks stay put. Go figure.
And while TXDOT makes driving a living hell, I wonder what EP’s unemployment levels would look like without their road projects because our local economic development continues to be bad.

Paso del Norte Health Foundation and many of the organizations that they fund. Good work is happening in regards to the health of our community at the grassroots level. Things that many never hear about.
