I am increasingly reluctant to drive at night, and one reason is the growing number of bicycle riders, joggers and walkers who are out after dark in all-black gear, no lights on their bikes or helmets, not even a white sock or scarf. Do they think that because they can see my car I can see them? Last night someone in all black clothing ran across Mesa, not far from the Brentwood intersection where he or she would have been able to cross with a traffic signal. If I had hit that person it presumably would not be my fault…I was traveling under the speed limit…but I’d have nightmares about it for the rest of my life.
If you are one of these invisible persons, or know someone who is, PLEASE tell them to carry something bright, put a light on their bicycle, SOMETHING!
Maybe the bicycle riders groups could discuss this….

Maybe these bicycle groups you speak of can also discuss traffic control devices. Red lights and stop signs are not only for motored vehicles.

Sadly, if they feel it is clear they are allowed to blow through stop signs without stopping. The problem is their judgment in that area is often more based on “can I beat the car” vs no cars in the intersection. Last week I had one cut through my turn at a four way stop. I missed him, but it was a wake up call on how truly stupid our bike community is getting.

Most of these bike riders ARE a nuisance and a traffic hazard, danger to themselves. Have observed all that Brutus posted and more. NO lights on the front, NO lights on the rear, NO turn signals, NO strobes, NO reflective tape on caps, helmets, the bikes or any where. BLACK hoodies. And yes, if “You” drive day or night, THEY expect YOU to do the safe driving and YOU to watch what THEY are doing. All of these lights, markers should be MINIMUM standards to ride on the streets. But just like vehicle traffic LAWS. There are no Police on the streets to stop the bike riders or enforce any traffic LAWS. Again this is on the POLITICIANS, Mayor, Clown Council. As bad as El Taxo traffic always is, they insist on creating a mass bike riding in El Taxo and worse traffic problems.. Cut down traffic lanes in CONGESTED areas, WASTE tax money, to create more and more bike lanes. But they still like to ride on On/ Off ramps where there are NO designated lanes.

Maybe the city should start enforcing laws that even bicyclist’s are supposed to obey and start them taking safety classes just like motorist have to do. The city wants all these bike lanes then they should take responsibility to make sure that the motorists are as safe from these bicyclist’s.

Three things that p*** me off. One is watching cyclists blowing through stop signs and stop lights. Another is runners who insist on running in the middle of a traffic lane and glaring at drivers with that f*** you look. The third one is all the jaywalkers on Mesa.
The cops do nothing about any of these even when laws are broken. They spend their time continually setting up speed traps at the bottom of inclines, knowing that even careful drivers tend to pick up speed going down hill.

No rules no license and no liability.
They are treated as an endangered species.
How many peopl do you know who have been hit by a cyclist that have been out walking and we’re hit left in a coma and have lasting injuries and the cyclist walked with no consequence.
So beware stay as far away as you can from anyone on a bicyclists.

Cyclists and runners are protected by law with no requirements as to lighting or attire choices. Sorry you have nightmares. Deal with it and while you are at it, share the road.

They don’t care. Police officers on the street are both unaware of and ambivalent about regulations for cyclists and pedestrians. They focus only on motor vehicles.
