Something special

Something is going on that I have not figured out.

I hope that you can help.

The March 19, 2013 city council agenda shows items 5B, 5C, 5D, 5E, 5F, and 5G.  They  all propose changes to existing ordinances as they apply to special events.

  • 5B would waive certain fees
  • 5C would exempt certain vendors from license requirements
  • 5D would exempt special events from noise ordinances
  • 5E would exempt special events from parking meter fees
  • 5F deals with sound amplification
  • 5G would “eliminate certain costs and fees”

The backup material does not provide a clue why all these changes are desirable.

Does this have something to do with the ball park?

Or is the Mayor planning to play his guitar in front of thousands of fans to raise money for his legal defense?

Does city council plan to bring back public executions of the “crazies”?

Something is wrong and they want to fix it behind our backs.

We deserve better

As usual, Brutus is correct. These changes are all about tying up loose ends and continuing to pave the way for the ball park and downtown redevelopment. These days, everything revolves around the agenda for downtown and the wants and needs of a few.

As much time and energy as Council and management spend on downtown and the ball park, maybe they should just be on the payrolls of those organizations. Some council members seem to be working overtime to pay back the campaign donations they received from these folks and their PACs.

If council and city staff were as committed to serving all of the people as they are to serving the downtown profiteers, we would all be better off. They can’t seem to move quickly enough when matters involve downtown and the new ball park. Just don’t ask them for any information or you’ll be waiting a long time, and don’t bother trying to do business with them on Fridays.

It will be very interesting to see how and where certain council members and city staff like Joyce Wilson and Alan Shubert make their money once their “public service” days come to an end. I’m sure their tireless efforts will be rewarded.

Having Cook play at the park would be quite a site…..(Announcer) “And now ladies and gentlemen, our feature act, a man who will soon do to the country music competition, what he did to El Paso and even to himself, let’s hear it for “J.C. and the Spend-a-holics!” (the crowd erupts) JC, “Good evening. l know some of you are wondering why we didn’t have this concert just a short, distance from here, given the fact that the Juarez park seats a 3rd more people and the parking is a lot more convenient, and they only spent less than a 4th of the cost than we did. Well, l’ll tell you why – it’s because those fools aren’t progressive like we are!!! (the crowd goes crazy) And now, here’s the 1st song: “Mommas don’t let your babies grow up to be mayors. They”ll flip-flop on the issues, you’ll use a lot of tissues, – crying from the choices they’ll make.” l’m sure once the green beer wears off, l’ll realize that this was incredibly stupid. Goodnight. zzzzz zzzzz zzzzz
