The ELP Time’s editors came out with their endorsements this morning. Talk about hedging your bets, they endorsed two of the leading candidates for Mayor, both Ortega, the anointed one, and Leeser. My wife commented that was strange since they have clearly indicated who they wanted to be the next Mayor. I told her to look at the last section of the paper. She said, “That’s only Automobile Advertising“. I said “Get it” she said “Oh…Got it”.
“Don’t Rock …..”.
The day before, poor Robert Cormell got hammered. The the Borderland Headlines stated he may face a tax dilemma if elected. The article on the cover page talks about the law clearly states that all judgements must be settled before taking office. Would you believe Cormell owes back taxes? The city attorneys office wouldn’t comment. They were reviewing the Proposed Amendments for omissions again. If you go on to read page 6B which I’m sure many readers didn’t bother since they went to the sport pages, you will find out this is old news and that he made arrangements to pay delinquent taxes on a property he bought last year.
Is this blowing smoke?
The point is Mr Cormell who is excellent and well qualified candidate for mayor, should find a more rewarding way of using his advertising dollars for his Bagel Shops.
Out or respect for Mr and Mrs Cormell please correct your post.
The El Paso Times inaccurately accused Cormell of owing taxes. The truth is the Cormell’s do not owe back taxes nor are they delinquent on their taxes.
In 2012 Cormell and his wife bought a craftsman home built in 1910 that was condemned by the City in 2007, invested $20,000 in a 6-month restoration, and tripled the home’s value on the tax roles. As part of the purchase agreement, they agreed to pay off the previous owner’s tax debt, which is how tax sales work.
A purchase agreement is similar to a mortgage – very few people pay cash for a house. So thanks to the Cormells, an original El Paso home is restored (btw it is near the Fall Mansion so it adds value to that taxpayer investment), the City gets someone to pay the previous owner’s debt, and a home is on the tax roles at triple the original value.
If the City requires the purchase agreement to be accelerated because it covers the previous owner’s back tax debt to the City then Mr Cormell will pay the purchase agreement off before taking office.
And the El Paso Times wants to smear the Cormell’s?
No wonder El Paso has a hard time getting good people to run for office. You can check out the amazing before and after pictures here http://www.facebook.com/robertcormellformayor/photos_stream
Thank you for your consideration.

As Brutus pointed out today, the reporters are just following Editorial policy. They probably were told to “Hammer” Cormell. but that’s all they could find and the whole thing fizziled like the article.

l don’t mean to get all “black helicopter-ish” on you (yeah, sure l don’t) but isn’t it a little bit odd that the “Good Boy” waited until the last minute to file for being a candidate, is spending gobs of $ in advertising, and has not told us ANYTHING on what he plans on doing as mayor. About a month ago, he spent an hour on the radio blabbing away while saying absolutely NOTHING. His website is also a joke, full of cliches’. The fact that he has no agenda makes me wonder what is his agenda? And then there’s schmucky Ortega. A man with a history of going against the voter’s wishes, being pompous enough to call the opponets of the stadium “enemies of progress” and not having enough decency to demand that all Reps. be included in the debates. lt’s a shame that my candidate doesn’t seem all that interested in winning, otherwise he wouldn’t be wearing the same bowling shirt to these debates. l deserve better and so does the rest of Texas.
