Dark age

Where are we on the ballpark?

Has anyone seen the final designs?  Are the construction bids in yet?

What are we getting and how much will be be paying for it?

Isn’t council supposed to be getting regular status reports? The minutes of the May 28, 2013 show council passing a resolution that required council to be given bi-monthly (every other) updates.

Motion duly made by Representative Niland, seconded by Representative Byrd, that the Ordinance be ADOPTED, authorizing the debt only for the amount originally authorized with bi-monthly updates to the Mayor and Council until Ball Park completion plus real time expenditure report and project management status from Jordan/Hunt. Whereupon the Mayor ordered that a vote be taken on the passage and adoption of the Ordinance which when so done resulted as follows…

Are they getting the updates and just not showing us?

These are simple questions that we should not even have to ask.

We deserve better

There is no correlation between words and deeds of our city management and council. That entire discussion and ordinance was simply grandstanding by Niland to try to calm the waters and distance herself from the problems she helped to create. These folks have no intention of being accountable to taxpayers and voters on matters related to the ballpark. If they didn’t give you a say in whether to build it, they surely aren’t going to care whether they provide updates.

Mountainstar’s renewal of the Tucson lease tells you everything you need to know about the progress of construction on the new ballpark. I responded to your “No Show” post in June giving my rationale for why the new ballpark will not open on time. Read my response again and ask yourself how anyone could have honestly sold the public a Spring 2014 opening date.

    No show

My next questions are: who is handling the inspections of the work being done and what quality and safety corners are being cut to fast track the completion? Our own city inspectors cannot be expected to properly inspect this project.

It seems we’re better and faster at tearing things down than in building them. Check out the article in today’s El Paso Times regarding delays related to the San Antonio Street repairs.

    http://www.elpasotimes.com/news/ci_24055686/el-paso-city-council-deliberate-claims-over-san

If they have not been able to complete these repairs to a small portion of San Antonio Street in 18 months, how can they possibly be expected to build a ballpark in less than 12 months. Or resources are so focused on the ballpark that basics like street repairs can’t be managed properly.

City officials and council will not even comment on the claims made by business owners without consulting with city attorneys.

Courtney Niland’s response: “We ask that everyone be patient.” Easy to say for a politician who doesn’t have to making a living at a business affected by the closure.

    Keep calm and carry on.

All bidding for this project is handled through the City of El Paso Purchasing department. I suggest you do an ORR to find out what has been bid and awarded. Bid packages are advertised in the EPT in the Sunday Paper “Legal Notices” section. I have seen several of them since early spring 2013.
