A comment came in from Hell Pasoan today that points us to a USA TODAY article about how major league baseball teams, even those in the playoffs, cannot get people to attend their games.
I thought his comment deserved an article of it’s own. Below is his comment:
If teams who are making the playoffs can’t get people in the stands because of a poor economy, then El Paso is going to have a hard time. Hell, Oakland is having to give tickets away at $2 a piece to get people to show up.
We deserve better

I have felt for years that baseball is a dying sport in America. I take heat from friends who are still baseball fans, but when I ask them how many major league games they have attended in the past 5 years, the answer is either 0 or 1 game. I then say, “I rest my case!” It takes fans in the stands to pay those hefty salaries, and I feel the players’ union has priced the game out of the average person’s disposable income range, much like the auto unions have done to American automobiles, thus making foreign competition lucrative. The National Football League appears to be king in America, but their players’ union needs to be careful that they don’t make the same mistake. The one big advantage to the NFL is that they only play 16 regular season games per year, plus the pre and post-season games.
I guess Mountainstar feels minor league baseball will fill the new stadium, but I suspect the shine will wear off after several years, and then we’ll have a stadium that we can call “El Paso’s Folly.”

El Paso economics: Spend a dollar to gain a quarter. BTW – did you hear that the Feds are going to keep interest rates low because the economy is still too shaky, which has caused the stock market to increase to an all time high. It used to be the stock market would increase when the economy was good, now it increases when the economy is bad. Welcome to ‘Alice in Wonderland.’

Okay…I have not been to a baseball game since I was a kid (long ago)…& do not go downtown a lot either…I will take-happily- my grand-kids because there are few safe -sane and nice venues in the El Paso area to attend…Hopefully other than baseball games and special events at the New Stadium.
Thank you Paul Foster for believing in El Paso !
It is Not all bad.
