Wondering

When will our current, temporary, city manager leave office?

Her resignation is scheduled for September 30, 2014.

How many days of unused sick leave and vacation does she have on the books?

Will she take them and leave early?

How long will she physically be in El Paso after she leaves office?

Will she be around when the actual numbers relating to the ball park and destruction of city hall become public?

How many of her senior staff will leave because of not having her to protect them?

We deserve better

Good questions. I would not be surprised if Ms. Wilson is gone by March. Her senior staff? Who in their right mind would want to be Ms. Wilson’s surrogate as the cost overages, schedule delays and indirect costs grow exponentially? My guess is her senior staff will conveniently seek lateral promotions to other departments or even (gasp) leave city government.

Let me see if l understand this: “America’s Greatest Mayor” still can’t find a gig other than being yet another sleazy lobbyist (those who can’t do, lobby). Then, you insinuate that Drama Queen Joyce might be leaving earlier than l thought she would. And finally, l recently mentioned on this blog that Muench should be fired for typing the same delusional crap about the stadium every 3rd week, and sure enough, he decided that he now wants to retire – after being fired. What does all of this mean? lt means l’m no longer an atheist.

all good questions – more importantly has her move made her more able to do battle with city reps without fear of recourse? Yes. She can do whatever she wants now because they owe her a year’s salary plus sick leave if they get rid of her. She really pulled a fast one on Holguin and friends.

Also – since strong mayor form of government will be on the ballot in 2015 and pass easily, any replacement for Wilson will be temporary. Nobody in the world would take that job know that city manager form of government is on its way out.

Didn’t know “doing battle with city reps” was on a city manager’s job description. A CM is supposed to take direction from city council. I doubt Mayor Leeser will allow Ms Wilson to “do whatever she wants now” if it concerns the city. I suspect what she wants to do now is collect her generous retirement and consider other job possibilities, possibly in the private sector.

The idea that a departing government employee can get paid for unused sick leave is totally ludicrous and a good example of what is wrong with government. Unused vacation time is one thing, but unused sick leave is another thing altogether. I know of very few private sector companies that would pay an employee for unused sick days.

I agree on the sick leave. I can tell you that in DC the move in all sectors is to comingle sick leave with vacation so that there is no difference.

Virtually all public sector agencies allow accrued sick leave and vacation to be paid out when retiring/resigning. Some limit the carryover of so many hours per calendar year. The program to allow carryover of sick leave is supposed to serve as a short term disability program in the event an employee gets an illness/surgical procedures, etc. that takes a long time to recover from. Private sector used to do that in the 80’s and then got greedy and put in the “use it or lose it” policy for vacation and sick leave. Private sector – and that includes publicly held companies – need to be responsive to the stockholders/owners – so they get rid of benefits that cost money/profits. Government agencies feed off of the taxpayer from the local to the federal level every day and have no need to limit benefits paid to employees. They have an unending source of funds from the taxpayers. Want it changed? The 74% needs to demand at next years budget hearings a change to that policy. It’s simple. You can’t back date the change though.

The State of Texas does not pay for unused sick leave. The leaving or retiring employee may donate a limited amount of unused sick leave to a pool designated for those who have used all their sick leave. The rest is gone.
