Another city hall move/ball park expense

Item 10.1 on the April 8, 2014 city council agenda contemplated spending $1.3 million to finish the move of the city’s traffic management center out of our demolished city hall building into new facilities.

The video shows city employees explaining that the management center is used to manage special events downtown like baseball games.

A city representative questioned what other city hall destruction and move projects need to be completed.  Our city manager actually laughed when she explained that some city employees were now located in a recreation center and that once they move out the center can be returned to its original purpose.

It reminded me of Cruella Deville.

We deserve better

Much like herpes, the ballpark is the gift that keeps on giving.

Meanwhile, the police association has brought to light the strain that ballpark event traffic staffing is going to put on police resources. The KVIA story below (ignored by the Times as best I can tell) brings into focus the true cost of the ballpark. There was zero discussion about game day expenses when the ballpark decision was being made. Also being ignored is the fact that these same kinds of resources will be provided to Mountainstar for all the non-baseball events (e.g., concerts, etc.) that Mountainstar’s owners will inevitably promote at the ballpark.

Not only did Mountainstar’s billionaires not build this ballpark themselves, they are not even paying the total cost of maintenance and operating expenses. They will, however, get all the profits — and the tax credits for any profits they might donate in their effort to enhance their own personal images and make everyone feel better about this scheme.

Joyce Wilson should be relocated to rec. center or relocated to the city jail. Put her desk inside of a jail cell so she can “get used to it.”

Even tho she explained the situation of some employees still at the O’Rourke center (the old YMCA) it doesn’t sound like she answered the question: How many more destruction and move projects need to be completed? Half-assed answers don’t cut it.

Well, tomorrow, the crap hits the fan as Mother Nature is not pleased with Mountainstar and the downtown baseball stadium’s disrespect to our current and past El Paso citizens that already PAID for the City Hall and Insights Museum.
So, Im really expecting: rain, hail, lightning, thunder, tornados, earthquakes, and locusts.
    You just gotta have Locusts.

To FIND parking, you’d have to drive to all 35 parking locations and circle the block, for each one, just to determine IF there is a space there.
    What a freaking nightmare.
And then, it looks like there are several more games that week !
Jury Duty and all downtown business offices should close by 2pm and get out of downtown.

At, Cohen baseball, I’d just drive to Cohen stadium and park.
    That’s it. Done.

I, personally, LIKE baseball and have been to hundreds of games going WAY back to the Sun Kings at Dudley Stadium.
    But, THIS. . . . . now, . . . NO.
This is baseball done wrong. The Spirit of Baseball has been ruined.

I look forward to Saturday: The Coronado High School Prom at the Civic Center and a baseball game at the same time…
