Community College sports

Reading the June 24, 2014 agenda for the public meeting of the El Paso County Community College Board of Trustees I see that they want to rent apartments for some student athletes.

Evidently they have at least three athletic programs:  baseball, softball, and cross-country.  The agenda item proposes spending just short of $49 thousand dollars for apartments for some of the athletes.

The backup material indicates that the budget for the three programs is $746,966 each year.

Admittedly I don’t know anything about the desirability of having athletic programs at our community college.

Hopefully some of our astute readers will weigh in and inform us about the issue.

We deserve better

  1. Baseball, and even softball, at the Jr. College level is important, and our EPCC has been competitive for a good long while, especially in baseball. I would hazard a guess that you have never even seen the facilities at the main campus for baseball, have you? This is a good expense for the college, and compared to what the major universities spend, it is a pittance.

I fully agree with the benefits of sports for all ages– exercise, socializing, strategy, teamwork, recreation, etc. But why are sports necessary at a community college? The fact that EPCC spent less than other colleges for a sports facility does not impress me. What would impress me is EPCC spending that 3/4 of a million on its academic mission. I would also be impressed if EPCC said, for a change, “We don’t need more funding because the taxpayers are giving us enough already.”
