Watching the hen house

The 2012 quality of life bonds has a Bond Oversight Advisory Committee assigned to it.

The committee was made part of the bond process to make the taxpayers believe that someone would be looking out for us.

Wanting to see what they are working on, I pulled up their latest agenda.

I can certainly understand a member not being able to attend a meeting once in a while and I don’t want to appear to be ungrateful for their work.

However, this is a nine member board.  That means that at least five of them had things that kept them from doing their job for us.

We deserve better

The city has many committees with this same problem. Appointees to the committees do not know the meaning of “commitment;” they just like to talk about their civic involvement or add it on their resume. Not only that, but when a committee does do their job, and goes beyond being a “rubber stamp” committee, city council oftentimes doesn’t even want to hear their recommendations and still does stuff contrary to those recommendations. Hence, we just let the foxes have at it!

Having attended several advisory boards to present issues, and encountered the same problem of no quorum, I have to agree with mamboman. And indeed, it does not appear that any of these boards are more than window-dressing.

It is not as if BOAC has any real power to enforce bond provisions, so perhaps they realize that they are just window dressing and have better things to do with their time.

The reality is that the people who get appointed to such committees and boards are those who support the original agendas and are friendly with those pushing the agendas.
