This article in the Dallas Morning News tells us that officials with the Texas state government are considering limiting property taxes that cities like El Paso can collect.
Our Lt. Governor is Dan Patrick. The article told us this: “Patrick’s push to effectively reduce growth in the amount of property tax revenue cities can collect has local budget-writers concerned. Supporters say that effort will provide Texans with long overdue property tax relief.”
With El Paso’s property tax rates seventh highest among the top 50 cities in the nation many of us would welcome the relief.

the unfortunate thing is this will affect our schools, healthcare and other vital services. When that happens, we should not blame Dan Patrick and Republican legislators. We can point the finger at our self-denominated progressive leadership and their Dem cohorts who have saddled us with taxes to spend on stupid sh*t that they have grossly mismanaged (cost overruns, sports complexes that can’t get off the ground, million for outside firms to conduct stupid studies for more stupid sh*t like trolleys) leaving us gasping for some relief .

That’s disingenuous. You seem unwilling to acknowledge that high-profile Republicans like Woody Hunt and Paul Foster are the force behind and beneficiaries of taxpayer funded projects like the ballpark, subsidies for developers, and government housing. The paint on the downtown ballpark wasn’t even dry before Hunt and Foster started talking about buying a major league soccer franchise, which would require yet another taxpayer-funded stadium. Republicans were also big backers of the QOL bond campaign. Keep telling yourself that all of your problems are caused by the Democrats. The truth is that neither party is your friend.

It is true here that the big-time GOP types are the biggest government welfare leeches in town. I’ve never seen anything like it in the places I’ve lived. That said, the local Dems are also the most incompetent political class I’ve ever seen and can’t seem to get anything right. Just think “San Jacinto,” “Country Club Road” and UMC/CH.
You could call El Paso “Dumbfucistan” and be right on the mark!

El Paso isn’t willing to curb its appetite for spending so the state law should help.
But, they’ll start developing fees, surcharges, float bonds. So I would think there would be measures to prohibit circumventing the intend.

If you limit property taxes that money will have to be made up some other way in some other form. Its a zero sum game
