Does it matter?

It is interesting to note that the city has changed the status of the San Jacinto Plaza project.

If is now listed as “matter no. 12-1004-214” whereas before when they listed the item for executive session there was no mention of a matter number.

San Jacinto Plaza Redesign, Solicitation No. 2014-043 (551.071)

San Jacinto Plaza Redesign, Solicitation No. 2014-043; Matter No. 12-1004-214 (551.071)

I believe that designating it as a matter means that the city attorney has now opened a case file on it.

Are they finally taking this seriously?

We deserve better

  1. Does anyone know why it was decided that the plaza needed a “redesign” to begin with? Who’s call was that? Don’t tell me it was Joyce Wilson!

Earthshattering development in City Council….they changed it from Solicitation No 2014-043 to Matter No 12! If it has been handed off to the lawyer, heaven help us because we know very well she doesn’t want us know shit.

As I understand it, Paul Foster’s group offered to update the plaza with their own money. With the approval of council, they worked with community groups and submitted a planl. But a well known El Paso female became involved and elicited the help of a couple of Hispanics who said the design didn’t represent “our” culture. Council buckled under the threat of being called non-inclusive and gave the group free reign to design what they wanted. Foster then withdrew his offer to pay as his group had to junk their already paid for, much more modest plan. Council then agreed to fund the plan from this new, very small and talent-bereft group. So — we went from a modest update, paid for with private money, to a huge, not particularly attractive, boondoggle paid for by taxpayers.

I have heard the same story, although without the name of the person who wrecked the Foster initiative. Maybe they should now call the Plaza the Hispanic Cultural Center??
