Flag service

February 22, 2015

We got this from Dave Hendrix, a long time El Pasoan and contributor to the community.  This is a program that helps in many ways.  We hope that you can support it.

The Kiwanis Clubs of El Paso would like you to help grow our Kiwanis Show your love of Country” Flag Program.  Our goal is to make El Paso the most patriotic city in the country!  Our flag program is over 20 years old and is growing every year.  Last year we placed over 2,500 flags throughout El Paso, Horizon & Socorro.

We provide a flag to display on our five most patriotic days:  Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day.

We partner with a local Boy Scout Troop or Youth Group in designated areas throughout El Paso & vicinities to deliver the flags (like a paper route).  They will install a 12” pvc pipe in front of your business or in your yard to hold the flag, they deliver your flag in the early morning and pick up your flag right before sunset on the designated Holidays above.

This is a super convenient program for the subscriber, a money maker for the Boy Scout Troop or Youth group and a patriotic achievement for the Kiwanis.

BTW – we need more youth groups to cover the N.E., the Lower Valley and Socorro. Have them contact me (see below).

For a minimum donation of $30 (more would be gratefully appreciated, the more you give the more your local youths of El Paso receive) pays for one flag a year. Your gift is tax deductible.  Please make your check payable to:

El Paso Border Youth Athletic Association

January 17, 2015

I ran across a local organization that deserves some recognition.  The El Paso Border Youth Athletic Association has this web site.

This is from their site:

The El Paso Border Youth Athletic Association (EPBYAA) has been working to grow baseball programming for El Paso’s youth for thirteen years. Since its inception in the year 2000, EPBYAA has served thousands of El Paso kids ages 10-19, contributing to the health and well being of area youth through baseball programming.

Take a few minutes to review what they are doing.

It looks like they have an indoor training facility that should make us proud.

Spread the word.  It looks like this low-keyed organization deserves our support.

Pro con website

December 26, 2014

I stumbled upon this web site the other day http://www.procon.org/

Actually I was listening to NPR.

From the site:

Our mission:

Promoting critical thinking, education, and informed citizenship by presenting controversial issues in a straightforward, nonpartisan, primarily pro-con format.

ProCon.org is a nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity

I have not spent a great deal of time on the site but so far it appears to me that they do what they say.

May we all enjoy the holiday while remembering those less fortunate than us.

We’ll be back on the 26th.

Failure to be fair

December 2, 2014

I am struck by the national news coverage of the events in Ferguson Missouri.

I don’t know who did what.  I can only hope that our legal system will handle the situation correctly.

The decision as to whether to prosecute the policeman involved is up to the grand jury.  Modern grand juries are often manipulated unfairly by the prosecutors resulting in the ability to indict “a ham sandwich”.

Yet in this case the grand jury has decided not to indict the policeman.

Media slant

Frequently this week I have heard news reports that the grand jury has “failed” to indict the policeman.  The word failed implies that they should have indicted.  Once again I don’t know what they should have done, but for some in the media to report that the grand jury has failed is unfair.

I would hope that if these reporters ever were being investigated that their grand jury would weigh the evidence and be fair.

We deserve better
