The “GULP” Syndrome

In the El Paso Inc., Sunday morning, word got out as to what is holding up El Paso’s Business and Retirement Growth. This has been know for years but our Mayor and the City Council feel that the growth retardation is from lack of Facilities. Their approach is to spend, spend, spend resulting in higher taxes. They really don’t question why new business don’t want to locate in our fair city. There are plenty fo things to do. Indoors, outdoors etc. Real estate is cheap by comparison to other cities but them they look at the property taxes.

“Gulp”.

The property tax is approaching the house payment. Well, our Progressive council says, “Look at what you get”, “a downtown postage stamp baseball field with outfielders in the street”. (I’m sure someone will use double-decker buses as bootleg bleachers).
Scattered city services though out downtown. Don’t you worry, we’ll build you a new City Hall on the on Asarco land”. Then one read both the local and the national press only to find that our School Districts are riddled with corruption only toping the City and County government for indictments and convictions.

“Gulp”.

“Hey boss, are you out of your mind? “How about San Antonio”? “Las Cruces”? etc. Such a deal, you say. High Taxes, Government corruption. Poor schooling at Premium prices. Where is the line?

The PSB thought is was great deal they were proposing; a Retirement village of 450 acres next to Painted Dunes Golf course. The Developers will flock to get in their bids. Truth is that there were no bids. Mayor John says “times are tough”, “our properties have increased in value”, “they went to Santa Teresa because they like Pecans” etc. Again he won’t look at the facts that our Property taxes are over 2 times that of Austin and the the highest in Texas, 5th highest in the country. And thanks to the Mayor’s largesse to the Baseball owners of the team that no one wanted, (even Stockton Ca. turned them down) our taxes will soon go higher and higher unless we get a New Mayor who knows how to put the brakes on things and to bring businesses and jobs to this community. That ain’t “Stevie Boy”, fortunately. Steve, maybe you should teach school again. Please stay away from contract law. (The railroad land? etc.).

Several years ago, about this time, we had a “runoff” and the incumbant who never would have let all this happen lost because you Crazies as the City Manager and Rep. Dist 1 call us, didn’t followup and vote. Let’s not let history repeat itself. There is early voting and we can settle this quickly and get the type on government that will stand up to the so-called Progressives and turn El Paso into a business and retirement destination.

  1. But we NEED that new baseball field to attract businesses….. and you forgot to mention the brilliant “runoff” taxes for any water that would “run off” your land…. And a Newspaper, who needs one? And city hall? – It can be moved. We have tons of taxpayer money to waste!!

    Cicero,

The INC piece and your response are both right on target, especially the part about property taxes alone being equivalent to a second house payment. The local promotion spiel about the cost of living being relatively low is hogwash. As just one example, we have a local refinery, yet gasoline prices here are among the highest in the state.

Local leaders are in denial about their inability to attract new businesses and retirees. The only retirees who can afford to live here are retired military.

Time for a reality check. It’s Oscar time.

M.T., l was agreeing with you up until the very end when you implied that “Captain Cliche” – “The Good Boy,” after defeating “Oligarchy Ortega,” is going to magically turn the 915 Titanic towards safer waters. l was disapointed but not surprised that Cliche’ refused to debate Oligarchy. My guess is, is that Cliche’ doesn’t have a clue what he should do (just like our current mayor) and that he is on an ego trip. Even though Oligarchy gained a few points by calling-out Cliche’ for not wanting to debate, he will still lose because when Oligarchy said that now that there are fewer candidates, the voters have a “clearer picture” is just a reminder of how pompous and arrogant Oligarchy truly is. Hey Oligarchy, l already had a pretty clear picture of what the candidates are all about. Good luck with your “whole new campaign” (pretending to be something else) because you’re going to need it.

I really don’t feel that Oscar Good Boy needs to debate Stevie Wonder before the runoff election. We already know what Stevie stands for based on his years in office as a city rep. The El Paso citizens seem to be casting protest votes to let Joyce Wilson, Mayor, and Council know what they think of their theatrics in the past several years. All Steve knows is Progressivism, but seems to be oblivious to the fact that he and his colleagues have guaranteed us homeowners and business owners higher taxes for the rest of our lives in El Paso. Yes, when Steve officially loses his bid for mayor, he will have to go back to teaching, as he seems unable to pass the state bar exam.

Since the El Paso Speak regulars insist on incorrectly calling the Byrd/Ortega faction “progressives,” when that group pretended to be super liberals, I guess you folks won’t mind being called “reactionaries,” even if you’re closer to the center. I don’t think “liberal” would fit you, since distorting the great real progressive tradition comes so easily to several of you.

You can criticize the crooked, corruption-friendly powers that be. But don’t mislead the public by pretending that their crookedness has anything to do with real progressivism.
