Double whammy

A few days ago one of our commenters asked one of us about the new radio system for the sheriff’s department.

You will remember that the city destroyed it’s 2008 radio system when it imploded city hall.  This article explained how the city chose to buy a new $20 million dollar radio system instead of moving the one they had.

My focus at the time was about how the rush to vacate the old city hall seemed to have made it impractical to move the multiple channel radio system one channel at a time, thus saving the equipment and our money.

Now the sheriff needs a new radio system like the city’s in order to be compatible with other agencies and to improve coverage.

The commenter asked a great question.  Could the old city system have been used by the sheriff?

We deserve better

When was the last time you saw a government vehicle that wasn’t relatively new? Same principle applies. New buildings. New vehicles. New equipment. Only the best for our public servants.

As a federal contract employee in El Paso I can speak with some knowledge on the subject. The FAA only has vehicles for maintenance staff and none of them are new. In fact most are older types of vans and trucks. They have one car and its not new either. I have seen EPISD vans that are incredibly old. Maybe some government agencies have cars for the big shots, but I havent seen them. The term relatively is pretty broad. I can assure you no NEW cars are in service, and if you saw the mileage on the other cars I would say the term relatively new would not apply. Maybe at the city, county, state and Army it’s different, but in civilian federal land out here it’s not like the guys are driving around in brand new vehicles. Come to think of it maybe it’s DHS you are seeing, they seem to get nice stuff.
