Shocking news

El Paso Development News published this article about our coming digital wall.

The wall will be located outside the entrance to our museum of history and will be 180 square feet in size.  It will be made up of four electronic screens and will be interactive with the viewer.

We will have the second one in the world like this.  The city sent some staff members to Copenhagen, Denmark to learn about the first one.

All this for only 3 million dollars!

Oops!

Although the digital wall is being funded out of the 2012 quality of life bonds it seems that something was forgotten.

You see the wall is electronic and it will be outside.  According to El Paso Development News:

Museum officials would like to raise another $1 million in order to build an enclosed glass structure around the courtyard that will help protect the Digital Wall and its users from the elements.

We deserve better

Not to mention the issues with glare from the sun on any video screen. Next they’ll say they did all of this to encourage the kids to get outdoors more. They were too busy working on the ballpark specs, which they also messed.

Why do I get the feeling that “the first TouchCity Digital Wall in the country and only the second in the world” translates to lots of problems and downtime. If I am am correct, it might become known as the disappearing wall.

City staff can’t seem to grasp fractions and just think in round numbers, like a million. $1mm is the property tax on about 300 to 400 average homes, not that anyone in city hall cares.

No one in city IT is capable of building this. I hope they have a proven vendor.

The wall was originally planned to be INSIDE the museum. Apparently the idea is to have it outside to be noticed as people head by for the ballpark. Fedup is right about the glare issue…not to mention how much fun it will be to stand outside on a June afternoon at 105º reading the signs. OR on a nice windy March day…or a 42º winter morning.

    Absurd.

Seems all decisions are being made based on what some people think is in the best interest of the ballpark and its tenants. The video wall will probably also run commercials and game highlights for the Chihuahuas.

City management clearly not considered how the sandy, grit-filled winds here pit windshields. Wait until they see what that does to a video display.

A few things about the Wall. The company that built the Copenhagen Wall is tasked with building this one. It was decided to put the Wall outside the entrance because it could then be accessed when the Museum is not open. The Wall will carry NO advertising, there will be a webpage that can be accessed publicly with a few of the functions disabled. Finally, people will be able to leave messages, download pictures and other material, with a delay of course, and generally make the Wall a reflection of the city. I was against the Wall, as a matter of fact, I was against ALL the bond issues, I own two houses and am afraid of the rise in taxes. I’ve examined the web page of the Copenhagen Wall and think this is one of the few things on that bond issue that’s worth the money. I am NOT an employee of the city or of the Museum.

The good thing is that the city attorney’s office will guarentee the privacy of any email messages sent out on The Wall!

There’s a reason why El Paso is the ONLY ONE in the USA to get on of these walls — because ALL of the other U.S. cities are not that dumb. Has anyone seen the visitor centers for other large USA cities, e.g. NYC? I GUARANTEE, El Paso will be the only one buying one of these. With technology moving at an unprecedented pace, this wall will be “outdated” in 3 years.
