The Times loses again

According to this article in the electronic version of the El Paso Times our El Paso Chihuahuas beat the Fresno Grizzlies in the first game ever played in the new ball park.

The Chihuahuas unfortunately lost and so did the Times.

They want us to buy their electronic editions but do not seem to care about fundamental things like accuracy and truth.

Do they have any sense of responsibility left?

We deserve better

The Time wrote a lengthy story today, questioning the ethics of one city manager candidate. They failed to do basic research, which would have turned up the follow story, which sheds more light on his questionable behavior.

The bigger question, which the Times disregarded, is that of how and why a person with his baggage is even being considered for the city manager position. The Times continues to allocate more editorial and news (let’s call it what it is: free advertising) space to the new ballpark than to major issues.

The following excerpt is from the Dallas story (link below) which the Times should and could have easily quoted, partly because the e-mails in the story lend credence to the allegations against Gonzalez:

“…e-mails obtained by News 8 indicate Gonzalez has been rewarded with more than his salary and benefits.

In April of 2008, the CEO of aircraft engine manufacturer Aviall, one of the largest employers in Irving, e-mailed Gonzalez, saying, “I didn’t forget your desire to take your family to a [Texas] Rangers-[Boston Red] Sox Game… compliments of me.”

Gonzalez responded, “Paul, great respect for a CEO that doesn’t forget about the small details, am very impressed.” Gonzalez took the tickets and attended the game.

Fast forward to an Irving City Council meeting Aug. 4, 2011. That’s when Gonzalez urged the Irving City Council to award Aviall economic incentives and a 40-percent tax break.”

Sounds like Gonzalez will fit right in here in El Paso city government, which has a cast of characters who cater to special interests and who are willing to sell out taxpayers in exchange for small favors.

First there were four candidates to replace the current city manager. After the Times article about Gonzalez, there will really only be three serious candidates, two of which are local. The inclusion of Gonzalez, a questionable character at best, as one of four finalists from around the entire nation makes me think that perhaps the deck has been stacked to make the selection of the current city CFO inevitable. Conspiracy theory? Or reality? It’s looking like the national search was a sham.

My question is to all who read/comment or make posts here. Why do you do it? Do you feel your activism will change anything?

The lack of character and qualifications of the candidates for this job come as no surprise to me. I continue to read this stuff and I am not sure why because I am completely convinced that as a lowly citizen I can make no impact whatsoever on policy or implementation of policy. Picking the least worst candidate either via voting or the appointment process seems fruitless.

In fact if I wanted to speak directly to my city representative I feel that I should ask her for the direct line telephone numbers for the Verde Group, Mr. Foster and Mr. Hunt. Do you feel the same?

If you call one of those three offices, odds are that she (your city rep) might actually answer the phone for them.

As for posting comments here, I consider it free mental health therapy which doesn’t put more burden on our healthcare system.

Which do you find more interesting and entertaining: reading ElPasoSpeak or reading the Times, which has become the in-house organ for the parties you mentioned?

Some people are shy. . . . . and some people are outspoken so all representatives of the government SHOULD read what the people are saying and suggesting in every venue (like this) that there is. What people are saying is a CLUE that any smart and worthwhile representative should check into.
Not that they should believe everything, but they SHOULD write it down and check it out.
Not everyone has the guts to deal with government representative themselves.
And if the representative ONLY went by what only their own followers told them, then the representative would only be getting half the story and half the input.
So, blogs, newspapers, articles SHOULD interest representatives and by taking information here and there, SHOULD make them appear to be worthy and smart as they dig through the information and FIND OUT what the people, the citizens really need.
A stupid representative, that is NOT WORTHY, just sits at their desk and underlines things that the City Manager just gave them. That’s WHY we have a ballpark that no one still knows the final cost and how it will be paid for.
If this happens, and IF that happens, and IF IF IF is not the answer to how to finance or run a city.
IF . . . . the tourists swallow this Extra Baseball Tax and IF the tourists keep coming, and IF there is EVEN a prolonged interest in baseball downtown and IF there is enough parking is too many IF’s that the representatives SHOULD have been smart to.

It’s actually a good job, where to seem smart and worthy, in your job, (any job) is just to write it down and discover what others are already saying. . . . and just. . . . GO CHECK IT OUT !
All they have to do, is LOOK and LISTEN.
This Blog, is one of those things to LOOK AT and READ.

Complacency is not in my vocabulary, nor should anyone subscribe to it. Apparently, it is forgotten about the “shot that was heard around the world” and the unknown Chinese man, with his bag of groceries that stopped a tank column by simply standing in of the lead tank. He was just a lowly man.

We should continue to voice concerns, unless the desire is to just roll over and give the unscrupulous, inept and spineless “leaders(cough, cough)” carte Blanche.
