Continuing the mess

Our city council had a meeting this Monday (May 19, 2014) to discuss whether council had violated the open meetings rules when it came out of executive session the other day and did not hold a public vote on action that they evidently had decided to take.

The meeting was a farce, more about that in another post.

Not posted

It seems that the special meeting held Monday was not posted on the city’s web site.  The screen shot below was captured that Monday and it does not refer to a May 19 meeting.

Does the law say that council has to post it’s agenda on the city web site?  No.

They post their other agendas there however.  A reasonable citizen has the right to expect that all city council agendas are posted in the same place.  Otherwise they could be hiding meetings frequently.

Deliberate or accidental?

If they deliberately skipped the posting they should be taken to task.  If this was an accident then we have further proof of their incompetence.

We deserve better

I watched the farce live. The city attorney was p—-d that anyone on either council or in the media would question the quality of her work. She totally controlled the meeting, claiming that any discussion discussion regarding the opinion she had rendered would constitute a review of her performance, which should not be discussed in an open meeting (I sensed an inferred threat of legal action against the city and I think that is how council members interpreted it.). Her rationale was the wording of the one item on the agenda, which might explain why you could not find it on the website.

She also prevented the public from being able to comment or ask questions regarding how the process has been handled. The net result was that the meeting became an apology session for Leeser and the council members to go down the dais and each profess their love and admiration of the city attorney. They even apologized for the “long hours” she has worked on this matter. The bottom line is that the city attorney is feared by the very people for whom she works, so don’t expect any serious accountability from that office any time soon.

Reps Lily, Limon and Robinson chose not to attend.last night’s meeting which was related to one of the most important decisions a city can make. Are we supposed to take these people seriously?
