Disappointed

We have disappointing news that our new city manager has the entitlement mentality.

When he agreed to come to El Paso part of his compensation package was an allowance of $10,000 for moving.

Now in the Tuesday, October 14, 2014 city council meeting we saw the city increase that amount to $26,000.

Try asking for that kind of treatment from your boss.

A deal is a deal.

You can read his original contract here.

We deserve better

  1. Sixteen grand over budget! More than double what he had originally agreed to accept! Why am I not surprised? People like this are grossly over paid to begin with, and to have all these little extras on top of their salaries is stupidity on our part, and greed on theirs.

There’s a good chance that the Mr. Gonzales will be worth every penny. I don’t doubt it took more than $10,000 to move his family. Should he have been held to the original number? Maybe, but he’s a hard worker with good ideas. He’s also a much, much better communicator than the previous CM who has GPS voice — she sounds like an computer that talks down to people. I see the $16,000 as a vote of confidence in Mr. Gonzales who has put a lot of effort into his first few months here. I can’t help but wonder if he knew what a rats’ nest he was getting into.

Try this. Tell the city that you made a bad deal when you bought your house in El Paso. You didn’t know the property taxes would increase so much over time, so you would now like a break on your taxes. See what they say.

Just remember that your council and mayor chose to give the city manager that additional $16,000. They also agreed to let him do paid consulting on the side. Next thing we know, he’ll be doing paid consulting and speaking engagements for local companies.

This is the same city council and mayor that disregarded Gonzalez’s problems in Irving.

I predict the new city manager will be gone in 2-3 years. He’s probably here long enough for other potential employers to forget about the ethics questions raised during his time in Irving.

While in Irving, he was of the highest paid public officials in Texas, but he was accused of using his influence to receive more benefits. He allegedly took sports tickets and other gratuities from vendors doing business with the City of Irving in exchange for granting those companies financial favors and tax breaks at the city’s expense.

In Irving, he went Tommy Gonzalez. Now that he lives here, he goes by Tomas Gonzalez.

  5. That’s odd – when I click the link to see his original contract it is, somehow, missing! Imagine that….

I believe City Council owes taxpayers an explanation. Can every employee that works for the City of El Paso amend the terms of their compensation package?
