City council ignores it’s own survey

The city engaged a group from UTEP to provide this 2014 citizen survey.

The report included this chart:

Citizensurvey2014spending

Schools and education do not come out of the city budget.  However the number one thing that the citizens did want that is supposed to be provided by the city was “street maintenance and improvements”.  As you can see downtown development ranked just below “other”.

Do we need to survey Van Horn’s residents to see what they want for our city?

We deserve better

Why of course they would ignore the survey, once elected they become instant genius and know what’s best. We don’t.

Legacy is what’s important to them. The survey is no different than the ones previously conducted. The surveys are to pacify the masses and give the impression they care.

It’s says a lot, however, that Education was the number one priority, yet the UTEP department that did this study misspelled “attractions”. The fact that our citizenry place a greater value on entertainment than on health, safety, and the local economy also tells you a lot about our community and our culture.

Tommy Gonzalez saved us $3.5M; new housing ill generate $7M+ but we still need a tax increase? Just because we have a surplus doesn’t mean we have to spend it – just lower taxes!!!

  4. So many things come to mind. While most surveys these days seem to be designed to drive specific results, I’d have to say that it is very telling that Council has to be aware that citizens are concerned about our deteriorating streets, yet they still do nothing. Instead, they give a pay raise that is equivalent to more than the annual salary of most City Employees to one person before they have even worked for us for one year, and despite the fact that the person in question has a contract (something else the regular employees lack).

The only survey that counts is the one in the voting booth.

Very interesting that all the way at the bottom is street lights and signalization. Yet over in the east side it seems every perfectly working stop light is being replaced for new very similar looking stop lights. Since when do we have extra money to tear out all the old lights on I10 and replace them with 65 New $60,000 highmast light poles?
