Dyer Brio construction

Sun Metro is awarding the construction contract for the Dyer Brio to a local construction company.

The company’s bid of $12 million was 21.3% under the engineering estimate of $15.3 million according to official documents.

How can that be?

We deserve better

Must be the same company that “built” the San Jacinto Plaza?

Foster doesn’t do business to break even or lose money. Maybe there were two sets of specs; one for Jordan Foster and one for everyone else. The only way anyone would know is to file a freedom of information request for copies of all the bids and compare them.

It’s common knowledge that the city allocates an additional percentage, something like 20% or 25%, for contingencies for projects.

Contractors know this and some purposely underbid to get the project knowing they can play the change order game with the city.

To get stuff done here you need friends in low places 🙂

  5. This apparently another one of those “Friends and family” contracts the local “Contracting Officials” are famous for. The project can’t be completed, done for the amount of money they said, can’t be done in the amount of time the “contractor” agreed on, signed a CONTRACT for the project. The rest of the “lowest estimate” will be expanded by MILLIONS$$$ in delays and cost over runs. The Plaza, Parks, rail “Project” cases in point. Some POLITICIANS, Public Officials, “Uncle Joe” shows up with a pick up truck, a shovel, couple bags of cement, his “Cousin Sam” and NO money. Has to be paid in ADVANCE to start the MILLION$$$ job. Apparently the LOCAL Government Contracting Official(S) in El Paso are also somebody’s “Friends and Family”. That’s also how they got their position.

Either the construction company wants to lose money or the engineers are incompetent. Take your pick.
