You need a commercial tax base to ease the burden on home owners. The city’s approach has been to give commercial investors tax waivers, thus shifting the burden to the homeowner.

The real issue is the big fish in our pond don’t want competition. There is no attempt to recruit the types of businesses that would invest in the community and enlarge the commercial tax base (and ultimately be influencers in public policy). Instead we focus on retail, call centers and back office operations. In short, service sector industries with limited advancement jobs. And the new retail simply kills old retail. The taxpayers of this city are doomed.

It’s called plausible deniability. Note that the quotes provided in the post also discuss the need to push back on the budget and look for cost savings. That didn’t appear to happen at all. Just a rubber stamp vote for more pain for the taxpayers and more revenue for “in” crowd of folks who have carved themselves a piece of the taxpayer pie.

I’ve heard that the budget hearings this year went particularly fast. Few good questions from the council or mayor. Mostly a rubber stamp exercise. Sounds like the whole crew was not prepared for the job.

I knew we were screwed when the former City Council endorsed Margo. Obviously they knew he would rubber stamp their fiscal irresponsibility. Unfortunately, many voters believed the lies he was telling them. Follow behavior not words. His EPSID tenure told me he was on the side of irresponsible spending.
