Our entry into world war two came after a Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on this day (December 7) 1941.
On August 12, 1941 congress approved an extension of the selective service act by one vote. The country was certainly divided on that issue and on the idea of intervention in the war that was going on in other parts of the world.
A short four months later, after the Japanese attack, the pendulum of public opinion shifted and men and women voluntarily entered the military service by the millions.

The older I get, the less attention I see being paid to this historical event. And, the more I am reminded that those who ignore history are doomed to make the same mistakes.

If we were to try and remember every “important date in US history” we would spend all our time remembering important dates and not much else. We don’t talk t much about the first day of the War of 1812, the start of the Spanish American War, the first day of the Civil War, the first day of WWI and so forth. Why is Pearl Harbor any different?
John, I think we collectively all know that electing idiots to office and appeasing foreign dictators and strongmen does not lead to good outcomes, in the 1920 – 40s to today, yet, we still elected an idiot to office and he is still appeasing foreign dictators and strongmen. Half of the population in this country apparently agree with that type of policy and think idiots are smart, enemies are friends, up is down, and Fox News is true.

We visited the Arizona Memorial some years back, a somber experience made more ironic by the number of Japanese tourists there. in October 1999, I joined the caravan of the curious at the Otero County Fairgrounds in Alamogordo for an escorted tour into the White Sands Test Range to Trinity Site, where the first atom bomb was detonated in July 1945. Another caravan formed in Albuquerque and the two joined at Trinity Site.
I counted 20 busloads of Japanese tourists there! They’re obsessed with this part of our intertwined histories.

The most important point in today’s post is that millions of ordinary people stepped up to serve, some in the military, some in civilian roles that were directly related to the war effort. Today, we have a volunteer military, but beyond that it’s every man for himself and we spend most of our time at war with one another rather than finding ways to help one another. The concept of public service has been lost and I am sick and tired of hearing highly paid politicians and government employees portray their work as public service when most of them are focused on how to leverage their position for personal gain.
