I saw this item on the Socorro Independent School District site:
A. Consider approval of Notice of Separation Incentive
INFO **The Department of Human Resources will offer a separation incentive in the
amount of $500.00 to the first seventy-five (75) classroom teachers, administrators, or
other professional exempt staff assigned to a school site, who submit a Notice of
Voluntary Separation effective at the end of the 2019-2020 contract year to the
Department of Human Resources on or before 5:00 p.m., on Friday, March 31, 2020.
Is this something that they normally do?
Are they downsizing?
We deserve better

This is done quite regularly and if you paid attention to districts other than just EPISD, you would know this.

Would you be kind enough to explain to us why they do this?

Brutus, above is a good article.
Also when I retired from AT&T in 1990 they offered me a pension and health care plus $75,000. I did not miss the daily double that day! 🙂 This year I hit being retired as long as I worked 30 years and I never regretted going early.

If you can incentivize some older, higher paid employees to leave , it makes room. for new lower paid employees. Everyone says “run the schools like a business,” so here is an example of that.

A big $500 incentive to retire and give up your paycheck and benefits? I’m sure there will be a long line. That’s less than half of a superintendent’s monthly car allowance.

This tells me that they must be planning to shut down the district for the balance of the year.

The real questions teachers should ask is if the district is shut down for the rest of the school year, does taking this bonus change the benefits package they get vs the package displaced employees still on contract get. We all know I hate taxes and think government is bloated, but I do believe that in a time like this government entities should be fully transparent with employees about the potential consequences of any choices they make. In the private sector if you quit (voluntary separation) you aren’t eligible for unemployment compensation but you are eligible if you are laid off.

If a person is going to make a decision to quit their job and isn’t smart enough to dot their homework and ask the right questions, I have no sympathy for them. They get what they deserve.

This is something that has happened before and it has nothing to do with the Corona19. 500 bucks is the cheapest I have ever seen It is supposed to make it easier for the finance people to make their budgets with more certainty. The theory is that the 500 dollar incentive will push a fence-sitter into making up their mind,, which of course is nuts! Last I saw EPISD i think it was $2500. I believe my board did not approve of this policy at the time.
