UTEP football financials

September 12, 2019

In responding to our inquiry about what the readers suggest we do about UTEP football this comment came in:

“Yawn. If it pays for itself, OK. If it doesn’t, get rid of it.”

We found this web page published by the Texas Tribune:

https://college-sports.texastribune.org/colleges/university-of-texas-at-el-paso/

According to the web page during the 2015-2016 school year UTEP spent $9,699,853 on their football program.

Ticket sales amounted to $582,469.

The rest of the shortfall came from student fees, university funds, NCAA fees, and contributions.

P-Tech

September 10, 2019

Dan Wever recently pointed out to us that P-Tech is coming to EPISD.

I’m finding it hard to figure out what this really is but I found this from the Texas Education Agency:

Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools (P-TECH) is an open-enrollment program that provides students with work-based education. P-TECH programs:

    • Provide students grade 9 through 12 the opportunity to complete a course of study that combines high school and post-secondary courses.
    • Within six years, enable students to earn a high school diploma, an associate degree, a two-year post-secondary certificate or industry certification, and complete work-based training.
    • Allow students to gain work experience through an internship, apprenticeship, or other job training programs.
    • Partner with Texas Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) and regional businesses and industries, giving students access to post-secondary education and workforce training opportunities.

Politics as usual

September 8, 2019

I can’t help but wonder how much money the city is going to spend for outside lawyers because of city council’s decision to call a special election to replace one of the city representatives.

Our mayor seems to be leading the charge on this.

Will he and his group come up with a candidate to fill this seat.

Is this about what’s right (did she commit an act that caused her automatic resignation) or about getting a supporting vote on city council?

Or is it about both?

Either way it looks like this will cost us more money.
