How bad is it at EPISD?

Spending at the EPISD has come to a stop according to what I am hearing.

Their financial troubles must be more immediate and serious than what we have been told.

District employees tell us that nothing is being bought except by the board.

Stories are circulating about them taking parts from one device to fix another.

Evidently vendors are not being called, even if it is for warranty work.

If it is true that they are doing their own roof work and thus voiding the manufacturer warranties then they are being short sighted to say the least.

We deserve better

This can’t be surprising. Who is responsible and where is the accountability?

Well, the president of the board of managers is blaming the elected board. He claims that they did not have time before the budget was passed to do their work and if the elected board had not objected to the takeover they would have had more time to do their job.

Evidently watching the financial situation on a regular basis is not part of the president’s vision. He seems to be saying that the board only needs to look at the finances once a year at budget time.

El presidente always has an excuse and a reason for not accepting responsibility, yet he led the charge to overpay for an unqualified superintendent and to allow the super to immediately start hiring high-paid execs for his “cabinet”. Where was the board when those offices were being remodeled? Oh, and does Franklin really need its own football stadium? Me think el presidente doth protest too much.

The president of the EPISD board of managers also said:

“I would ask staff a few weeks and months ago, why are you doing it this way? The response was typically ‘well we’ve always done it this way,’ and I’m saying I don’t want to hear that again. … I said I’ll shoot you if you say that,”

That was a really stupid, intimidating comment, especially given all the workplace shootings being reported these days, including shootings at schools. That’s not my idea of mature, thoughtful leadership.

In many cases, the “We have always done it this way” answer is a correct answer because of state and federal mandates. In many cases, school districts hands are tied in the “way they do things” because people like Margo are in state legislatures writing stupid laws that require districts to do things specific ways.

As a former state legislator, one would think he would know that. Of course, he never ever ever supported public schools when he was in Austin, and even now, they are laying the groundwork for a n El Paso Charter School district like was just done in Dallas and in New Orleans.

God help us if that happens.

I say get the board of managers themselves to do the roofing in the middle of summer when the kids are out of school. And the city CFO should not be exempt from roofing duty. It can be like Habitat for Humanity with designer coveralls.
