Safety second

As we wrote yesterday, these are the  city’s new official goals:

1.) Create an Environment Conducive to Strong Sustainable Economic Development
2.) Set the Standard for a Safe and Secure City
3.) Promote the Visual Image of El Paso
4.) Enhance El Paso’s Quality of Life through Recreational, Cultural and Educational Environments
5.) Promote Transparent and Consistent Communication Amongst All Members of the Community
6.) Set the Standard for Sound Governance and Fiscal Management
7.) Enhance and Sustain El Paso’s Infrastructure Network
8.) Nurture and Promote a Healthy, Sustainable Community
Their number one goal is about money.
Many of us think that the primary purpose of government is to ensure the safety of it’s citizens but in El Paso that will evidently come after the city focuses on money.
How we handle police, fire, ambulance, sanitation and other public safety issues is, according to the city, a secondary issue.
What a shame.
If they think that prospective new companies won’t see this as a problem they are once again wrong.
We deserve better

Here are their sub-goals for public safety and security. Based on the first one, they are clearly obsessed with rankings and publicity.

2.1 Maintain designation as one of the Nation’s top safest cities

2.2 Strengthen community involvement in resident safety

2.3 Increase public safety operational efficiency

    2.4 Improve motorist safety

2.5 Take proactive approaches to prevent fire/medical incidents and lower regional risk

    2.6 Enforce Municipal Court orders

2.7 Maximize Municipal Court efficiency and enhance customer experience

2.8 Implement effective code enforcement strategies to reduce nuisances, enhance visual appearance and improve overall health and safety

    2.9 Promote building safety

They specify motorist safety, but the city also refuses to ticket people for jaywalking, something which has resulted in numerous deaths.

You have to laugh at 2.7. They want to enhance the “customer experience” for people who have to appear before the Municipal Court.

Looking at 2.8, they are clearly obsessed with “visual appearance”. Not sure what that has to do with safety and security.
