Money not an issue at Sun Metro

Our city council held another one of its special meetings February 8, 2015.

No video of the meeting appears to be on the city’s web site so we cannot see who said what.

One item on the agenda was to approve a contract extension with the company that manages our bus system.

According to the agenda our bus system manager was to make a presentation that included an evaluation of the contractor’s performance.  This slide shows the evaluation factors:

Noticeably absent is any measure of the financial effectiveness of our bus system and its contractor.  It is also interesting that they presented numbers about the number of complaints per 100,000 customers but did not present any information about complaints from people who are not customers.

They also were going to ask council for permission to add an assistant director for street car operations.  The street car construction project is being managed by the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority (CRRMA).  Once the project is finished it is to be turned over to the city to operate.  That should be sometime in 2018.

In the meantime Sun Metro sought council’s approval of a new position–assistant director for street car operations.  This new person would be responsible for watching the CRRMA and making sure that they do things the way they are supposed to.  The cost will be $149,500 per year.

We don’t need to worry about the hiring process.  The bus system contractor already has someone that they want to fill the position.

Next we will probably hear about needing to hire someone to watch the watchers.

We deserve better

Regarding ridership. Here’s my rant again. If they had evening service so you could attend an event downtown and go home on public transport it would help. Instead, all the bus stop signs exhort you to go various places, such as the Plaza Theater, and leave the driving to Sun Metro…ha. That works for a matinee…Is there some kind of collusion here to ensure that the parking garage owners do not lose any business to public transport?

Does anyone on Council ever read these posts? Do they understand how inept they are? So frustrating. The mayor is obviously unable or unwilling or not smart enough to take charge.

What the heck is a streetcar? The trolleys? They told us the state would be funding the trolley project with a few million but here we go with some “added costs” like managers, ass’t managers, not to mention infrastructure and maintenance and who knows what else will be kicking in to add to our tax bills.

If the present management contractor has already met the time line set out in the original contract the City must go out for bid. Unless, of course, if the City is happy with the way First Transit misrepresents actual ridership numbers……they should keep them and not look at either self management or other qualified transit management companies. Our “strong ” city manager type of government works very well at covering up actual performance measures. Go out for bid, the people who provide all the federal dollars would prefer it . With my additional sales tax funding of mass transit , I demand the City go out to bid or eliminate the tax.

  5. Am I understanding this correctly? Sun Metro is not really staffed by employees of the City? It is therefore, in essence, privatized? We do, indeed, deserve better. And, you just know that this new admin position will be adding on more admin staff to “support” whoever they have chosen to hand this fat plum to, won’t it?
