Automatic pay raises for city council

One of the ballot items on the upcoming election asks if we want to change our city charter.

From the ordinance that puts the issue on the ballot:

Prior to September 1, 2019, the annual base salary of the District Representatives shall be set at twenty-nine
thousand dollars, and the annual base salary of the Mayor shall be set at forty-five thousand dollars.

Commencing on September 1, 2019, the annual base salary of the District Representatives shall be set at
the amount equal to the 2017 El Paso County area median household income as established by the United
States Department of Housing and Urban Development or successor agency ($45,300), and the annual
base salary of the Mayor shall be set at one and one-half this amount ($67,950). Thereafter, on September
1, the base salaries will be revised annually and be set according to the above formula based on the prior
fiscal year median income for El Paso County.

Ballot language

What the voter will see on the ballot is:

Should Section 3.2 of the City Charter, relating to the salaries of the Mayor and District Representatives,
be amended to provide that beginning September 1, 2019, the annual salary of the District
Representatives shall be set each year at the amount equal to the El Paso County area median household
income as established by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development or successor
agency for the prior fiscal year, and the annual salary of the Mayor shall be set each year at one and onehalf
that amount?
YES ( )
NO ( )

Too much trouble

They evidently think it is too much trouble to ask the voters for a pay raise when they want one.

A 56% pay raise would be nice for you, wouldn’t it?

We deserve better

I’m a big time no on this one. Will they help keep my property taxes from going up each year. I think not.

If this passes we need a forensic audit of the Election Department!

It might in fact be better to have a salary that would enable fulltime Council work without behind the scenes employment…but a yes vote for this item will simply be interpreted as approval of what these clowns are doing. NO.

I vote YES so the average Jose can afford to serve on CC. Otherwise, it’s a hobby for retirees and wealthy,.

Jerry, the average Jose can’t afford to win a city council seat. The donors are “buying” seats with the amount of money contributed to the candidate who will spend the most. A yes vote simply means that the REIT investors’ hand-picked candidate will get more of your tax dollars in salary and those increases will happen every year. Look at Commissioner’s Court. Have higher salaries improved the quality of candidates? No.

I feel like raising the salaries of city council reps is basically us paying for salary increases for people on the payrolls of local developers.

We, the “Employers” are going to give them a pay raise because THEY do an  outstanding job for US?  THEY want more money, because they feel that WE owe THEM for all that THEY do to US?   THEY feel that tax, waste, spend, tax some more is a rough job?  THEY feel that THEY deserve, WE owe them a pay raise and THEY will   “regrettably” have to INCREASE our TAXES to pay for it.   Pay THEM more, THEY start REPRESENTING us ??

Not to worry. I saw it on my mail in ballot, and cast my vote “No.” No problema.

So if WE don’t want to pay THEM more every year, without having a VOTE, the vote on the ballot is NO ? And then THEY increase OUR taxes to pay for THEIR pay raise. Yes, THEY think that WE really are that gullible, STUPID. For all that THEY do to US, THEY should get about $10-20 bucks a meeting. And when THEY have SECRET meetings behind our backs and lie about it, WE should cut THEIR pay or fire THEM. THEY do not work in OUR best interest. Not one incumbent should be re-elected.
