P-Tech

September 10, 2019

Dan Wever recently pointed out to us that P-Tech is coming to EPISD.

I’m finding it hard to figure out what this really is but I found this from the Texas Education Agency:

Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools (P-TECH) is an open-enrollment program that provides students with work-based education. P-TECH programs:

    • Provide students grade 9 through 12 the opportunity to complete a course of study that combines high school and post-secondary courses.
    • Within six years, enable students to earn a high school diploma, an associate degree, a two-year post-secondary certificate or industry certification, and complete work-based training.
    • Allow students to gain work experience through an internship, apprenticeship, or other job training programs.
    • Partner with Texas Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) and regional businesses and industries, giving students access to post-secondary education and workforce training opportunities.

What are your thoughts about what should be done with the UTEP football program?

Politics as usual

September 8, 2019

I can’t help but wonder how much money the city is going to spend for outside lawyers because of city council’s decision to call a special election to replace one of the city representatives.

Our mayor seems to be leading the charge on this.

Will he and his group come up with a candidate to fill this seat.

Is this about what’s right (did she commit an act that caused her automatic resignation) or about getting a supporting vote on city council?

Or is it about both?

Either way it looks like this will cost us more money.

Remember this in November

September 6, 2019

Well they got us again.

In Maximum tax increase from the city we pointed out that while city council took a preliminary vote to increase our property tax rate to 88 cents per hundred dollars of valuation they simultaneously published notice in the Times that they would increase the rate to 90.73 cents.

When it came time to finalize the budget they used the 90.73 cent rate.  Three of the members that are up for re-election voted against or vetoed the increase.

Note that we did not hear much explanation as to why they voted against the increase.

It seems that they were only concerned with what their vote would like to the voters.
