Our readers pointed out to us the other day that the purchasing award the city recently got involved the city paying a fee of either $400 or $600 depending upon whether the city is a member of the organization.
Following up on that thought the city also receives a “Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting”.
Maybe the certificate is designed to make us feel better about what the city is telling us.
As it turns out the Government Finance Officers Association is the group awarding the certificate of achievement.
The city uses our tax money to pay for their submission:
Would the city tell us if they failed to get the certificate that they bought?

Looks more like the fee was $1,150 or $2,300 for our population size. But that aside, this “award” is like having your name and bio published in the who’s who. What a crock.

It’s likely worse than that. The organizations that give these awards also have annual conferences, so our “award-winning” team probably got an out-of-town junket at taxpayer expense as well. I’m sure it was educational and “all business” just like the conference where two of our local school superintendents got in an after hours parking lot brawl.

We’re spending money on these awards so that Tommy G and others can use them to make their resumes look good. Nothing more.

This is like the IMAGINARY “Designation” as “America’s SAFEST city”. That is a magazine Ad the city, politicians BOUGHT to get touristas to come to El Paso. Has nothing to do with FACTS, reality. Check the FBI Uniform Crime Reports, to see what cities are designated.

You guys are talking chicken feed when it comes to paying for accolades. EPISD pays over $40,000 dues to the Council of Great Urban Schools and Cabrera gets to sit on BOD. He along with a few other members got nominated for Superintendent of the Year.
