Many of us wonder why the new arena cannot be located on the old Asarco land.
It would have easier access and less congestion.

Money must not be important now that EPISD has had their bond approved.
The district’s board of trustees voted recently to hire an out of town firm to manage most of the bond projects.
The scope of work and the amount that the firm will be paid are yet to be negotiated.
Now that the firm knows that they will get the work I suspect that their negotiating position will be enhanced.

Our speaker of the house of representatives is in an interesting position.
He disappointed many last year as he accommodated the wishes of the incumbent president.
Then he chose not to fully support his party’s presidential candidate.
In January he will face a different situation with the republicans having control of both the house and the senate as well as the presidency. The republicans need to make things happen.
Predictions don’t cost us much so consider this one:
The new president is a corporate executive. He has experience handling subordinates and knows that powerful people do not often just fade away.
One solution is to keep him close. Appoint him to a cabinet position–not a premier one like defense or state, but instead to something that he should care about like education.
Tell him to clean up the department and then maybe he will get a promotion. If he fails he will hear “you’re fired”.

According to a Times article the other day our city attorney maintains that in discussions with railroad representatives they told city officials “when you come to that meeting you need to talk to us about No. 1, finishing your obligations…”.
What does the railroad expect? The city made a deal with them in order to get land they needed for the ball park. Does the railroad actually expect the city to do what they promised?
The deal was made in 2013. We all know it takes time for the city to do something–unless it is something that the city wants.

It seems that most of our city council would prefer that the new arena be built on a little used railway yard next to interstate 10.
The problem is that the city tells us that the railroad wants a king’s ransom for the land, namely the closing of many railroad crossings in the city.
Whereas the city can use eminent domain to condemn and take the properties of individuals they cannot do so with the railroad.
The rail yard in question seems to be used very little if at all since the railroad built a 2,200 acre site in nearby Santa Teresa, New Mexico.
