Ethics ordinance changes

There’s talk down at city hall about updating their ethics ordinance.

The last meeting of the ethics review commission was February 19, 2014.

You would think that with all that has gone on at the city this commission would be pretty busy.

The  unfortunate truth is that this group is toothless.  They can’t do anything without council’s approval.

We deserve better.

John, it’s the auto correct and there is way to edit.

Sadly, your last sentence says it all for a lot of the special “boards, task forces, commissions”, etc. Toothless, no power, no bite, nada…in fact some don’t meet and when they meet, it’s more of a city presentation for the group than actual discussion and action on pertinent issues. As for action, some don’t or won’t or can’t even address city council, and if they do, it’s up to city council what action may be taken and that might be totally contrary to what their own “token” board recommends. Nothing but “tokens” that city council can point to and say they’re working on something…and deceive members of the public into thinking they can “get involved” and “help” on issues they care about. Call me a pessimist or a crazy but bet you can’t prove me wrong.

What you say is absolutely true about the one board whose sessions I attend. Not only toothless, but worse, as the existence of this advisory board pretends to the public that council is interested in the subject and wants good advice.

Believe me I hear you. I’m in the same boat. After I commented I realized there was that one city charter commission that may be an exception that they seemed to listen to, but it was loaded with “friends of a feather” like Wilson and Wardy.

The ethics rules are just window dressing. Most, if not all, of the members of council are going to do whatever they please because they know the odds are against there being any real consequences for doing the wrong thing.

  5. cache king? Oh, well, I agree that it is pointless to have such a board, unless the board has some power, and unless you elect people capable of learning what ethics means, and then actually displaying a modicum of same.

The shock is they can spell the word “Ethics”. Let alone define it.

The Board should be independent, nonpartisan, civilian members. Members that would self nominate and have no connection with any of the council members.

Why bother to change or review the rules if the board is the jurisdiction of the people that they will cache king ?
