Fired for telling the truth

The Daytona Beach News-Journal printed confirmation of what we saw happening to one of our former deputy city managers but were never able to prove.

From their Saturday, April 25, 2015 edition:

Shang explained she had gotten into a clash with her boss, the city manager, when she answered a City Council question about the cost of a ballpark.

“I was asked a question during a council meeting. I answered honestly, and it contradicted her and it embarrassed her,” Shang said.

She was placed on administrative leave, given a severance package and ultimately the manager left and Shang’s position was eliminated.

Shame on our former city manager and city council.

We deserve better

But she wasn’t fired…she sat at home for nearly a year, drawing her salary, and that got her to the point where she was eligible for a pension forever from the taxpayers. And no discussion of this was allowed because it was a “personnel matter.”

  2. Disgusted says:

Speaking of people getting fired, can some please explain why Siria Rocha was not fired from the city attorney’s office after sending pornographic e-mails and trying to have a license plate traced? How did she manage to keep her job?

    • Brutus says:

The Times has reported that she worked in the county attorney’s office.

Why she was not fired is a great question.

      • Reality Checker says:

Thanks. You’re correct. It was the county attorney’s office. That she was working in either attorney’s office makes it all the much harder to understand how she kept her job given the things that she did.

It’s interesting that the Times was able to obtain all of this information regarding a county employee when every inquiry regarding a city employee is always rebuffed on grounds of it being a personnel matter.

That story is totally true. We heard it at the time. Certain Council members were out to get Shang and the CM used their complaints to justify dumpling her. Shang was the only truly competent person in that administration. Other deputy managers were simply those who were friendly to Wilson.

  4. hopeless in El Paso says:

Good catch. Guess all our ex city managers can be honest when they go to other cities. Remember though that Shang got a sweet severance package so it was the taxpayers who paid. And Wilson is still in El Paso refusing to be accountable for the ballpark costs.
