EPISD–picking school principals

We keep hearing from EPISD that they want community input in the selection of school principals.

In fact the district creates a separate committee for each principal being selected.

We spoke the other day with a lady who has served in the past on two of these principal selection committees.

She told us that the committee is allowed to observe the questioning of the top three (chosen by the district) candidates.

Observe is the operative word here.  The committee members are not allowed to ask questions of the candidates.  The questions are asked by a district employee.

This situation is one more example of our government agencies pretending to do things that they do not.

We deserve better

All of these community meetings are a sham and so are these so-called hiring committees. About 6 months ago the board gave this superintendent the power of placing whoever he wants in whatever position he desires. The last few principals appointed have not been picked by committees, he has simply gone in one day ‘red Solo cup’ in hand and picked whoever can be kept in line with his ideas. The only community that counts is Juan Cabrera, that’s what we get instead of Garcia? Yeah right! Pinnacle of ethics!

Well, obviously it will be necessary to have another bond issued. EPISD just knows that anything can be fixed with a bond issue and bond issues are “for the children’ don’t you know?

PLEASE tell me that this does not surprise anyone here… Making decisions and deals in the shadowy back rooms then bringing forth their declarations of what WILL be and CALLING it transparency is what the EPISD administration does.

You know WHY they do this? Because they have their own employees so wrapped up in fear and the tax paying public so bamboozled and out of reach, that they know they can get away with it. They convinced these people to vote for that bond. They can literally do anything with impunity…

The EPISD is lying to you. With nearly everything they say and do. The administration has NEVER in my knowledge and experience been so opaque as far as the sharing and flow of information about ANYTHING that is going on… Even the smallest policy decision is being held to the vest until the very last possible moment. People who are definitely in the “need to know” are being told vital information after the fact.

Did you know that Central Office employees may not… EVER… communicate directly through e-mail with a campus principal? That’s right! They have to submit any communication to the office of Academics so that it can be vetted and edited and then placed on a website called, “The Principal’s Landing Page”. All such communications must be submitted by Wednesday morning. THEN, IF it is “worthy” of passage onto the principal involved, it will be placed on the Landing Page on that Friday (to probably be read on Monday if ever). So, if you have something vital to communicate or ask of a principal on Monday… You have to wait a WEEK just to have them see it!

It is all about restricting the flow of information. It is about control of the information and the people bearing it. With all the strict compartmentalization and the hiding of information and the total lack of access the “little people” have to the administration at nearly all levels, the ability for the District and its leaders to hide what they are doing has increased 100 fold over the Garcia years.

That being said, I am sure that all this hiding and secrecy is only for “good reason” and we should just blindly trust them with everything (including the hundreds of millions so many idiots just handed them to play with…).

    We deserve FAR better.

This would be at the direction of the Supt. A board generally doesn’t involve itself in this kind of stuff nor should it unless there is fraud or mismanagement.

It is weird, but then weird isnt illegal.

Everyone should be aware of what a good principal does and asking the public what they want in their new principal is actually quite a joke. There is only one thing that needs to be decided about a qualified new principal and that is whether or not you are going to require them to speak Spanish!

A lack of respect and concern for the opinion of the people paying the bills is a big part of the problem with EPISD and government in general. It’s that “give us your money and STFU” mentality that people are tired of.
