According to the Times city representative Niland will return to city council Tuesday, April 4,2017.
They say she has been absent since December 20, 2016.
She evidently has been handling a divorce.
An open records request should tell us whether she has continued to draw her city paycheck.
According to the Times article she has the authority to move her two children to Travis county or to Florida.
Will she move out of town and thus escape the high taxes that she helped foist upon us?

I wrote several replies here in this “reply box” (and changed every one of them) . . . and I deleted them all as they were “TOO vile and nasty to print or display”, about what I feel about Niland.

She just delivered her resignation speech. I was at the City Council meeting. The last thing on the agenda.

Ms. Niland should have resigned 2 months ago. I’m sorry for her troubles, but waiting this long to resign shows her disregard for El Paso and her district.

Even in resigning, she was unwilling to do the right thing. It shouldn’t have taken her this long to step up and resign. She knew full well her constituents were not being adequately represented. Now, she still gets to draw her salary until a successor is named and she waited until now to resign, making it near impossible to get this on the upcoming ballot. I’m sure the timing was in no way affected by the fact that she can continue to draw her salary until a successor is named. It seems to me that she is being manipulative and deceitful to the very end. Good riddance.

Totally agree. Divorce is seldom easy for anyone, yet many people manage to go to work throughout the ordeal. Maybe she stayed in touch with her office, but waiting this long to resign is an insult to her constituents and probably an unnecessary expense for all taxpayers.

Just another example of how the taxpayers of El Paso are being taken advantage of. What other “employer” would tolerate a four month absence from work for a divorce particularly when the excuse was supposedly a husband’s illness. Yet good old Mayor Leeser is full of sympathy for Niland’s sad time. Mayor, she played you. A leader would have started removal procedures after she missed three meetings, and warnings after two in a row. Instead, the constituents of Niland’s district have gone and will go without representation for nearly half a year.

Niland sold her house too Oscar Leesor. DId she wait this long to resign so Leesor could appoint her replacement or is that even plausible ?

I say she timed this in order to draw her salary for as long as possible. Now, knowing of the real estate deal with the mayor, I think he is complicit in enabling her to draw her unearned, totally unjustified salary.
