Buses vs Police, Fire, and streets

December 19, 2017

If you break down the 8.25% sales tax we pay locally the city gets 1.5%.  The state gets 6.25% and the county the remaining .5%.

Incredibly the city has allocated a third of their portion  (.5%) to Sun Metro leaving 1% to help fund operations.

Solving our problems for only $1,000

December 18, 2017

Our westside district representative is even more capable than we thought.

He has decided that he wants to host an event called “Sunday Morning Kern Place Art & Farmers Market” and he needs city council’s approval.

This is the resolution that he placed on council’s agenda:

Ignoring the grammatical errors we can see that this one event “creates an environment conducive to strong sustainable economic development”.

Wow!

The event also “enhances and sustains El Paso’s infrastructure network”.

It “sets the standard for a safe and secure city”.

Baloney!  Talk about a puffed up sense of self importance.

No harm, no foul?

December 15, 2017

According to the Times our district attorney is still looking into various city council actions that may have been violations of the law.  The Times wrote this:

District Attorney Jaime Esparza asked for assistance from the Texas Rangers to look into the findings of that investigation, which is still underway. Esparza said he hopes to have that investigation, as well as another involving city officials, resolved early next year.

From the sound of his statement it seems to us that he has decided not to pursue charges.  If he concludes otherwise the issues will not be resolved until a trial occurs.

Have we misread this?

City moving back to 5 day work week

December 14, 2017

From reading recent city council agendas it looks like the city is making progress returning to a five day work week.

They have been changing various ordinances and policies to reflect the fact that they are changing from the four day week to the five day week.

This is better.

Cost not an issue

December 12, 2017

Item 14.1 on today’s (Tuesday, December 12, 2017) city council agenda reads:

This is a Public Hearing for the proposal accepted by City Council on November 14, 2017 for Solicitation 2016-371R for the Development Opportunity for a Public Private Partnership for a Mixed-use Urban Development, Including Structured Parking at Mills Avenue and Campbell in Downtown El Paso from Meyers Group Development LLCs / II Sabes L.P. The Proposal is available for public inspection at the Purchasing and Strategic Sourcing Department located at 300 N. Campbell, El Paso, Texas 79901. Public comment will be heard on the item.

We can’t speak for the public as a whole but wouldn’t it be nice to know how much money they city is thinking of putting into this project so that public comment would be better informed?

We deserve better
