EPISD–gag order? or consistent communication?

June 6, 2017

The conflict between the EPISD school board president and the group that includes the county judge and one of the school board members is heating up.

At the Tuesday, May 30, 2017 meeting of the school board they evidently went into closed session and discussed how school board members are supposed to handle questions from reporters.

Evidently the local board’s guidelines tell school board members to direct questions to the superintendent or board president if the question does not involve the district that the school board member represents.

On the other hand the district evidently has written policies that, according to one board member, conflict with the guidelines in that school board members are free to speak as long as they make it clear that they are speaking for themselves and not the board.

Regardless of the board’s guidelines or policies it seems that elected officials need to answer to the public.

There is an underlying fight going on here but it cannot interfere with our ability to interact with the people that we elect.

Citizens do have rights.

EPISD–marketing

This came in from Dan Wever:

EPISD–special board meeting videos

June 2, 2017

It appears as though EPISD is no longer posting the videos of their special board meetings on their website.

The video of the March 15, 2016 special board meeting is the last one that is available.

Now they not only convene “special” meetings when it is inconvenient for the public to attend, they also don’t publish the videos so that we can see what happened.

EPISD–unauthorized closed meeting

June 1, 2017

The EPISD board of trustees went into closed session the other day to discuss “legal aspects of political activities by trustees and employees”.

Not allowed

The school district has published written policies.  The link below will show you the one that addresses closed meetings:

Board policy BEC–closed meetings

Policy BEC lists the reasons the board may meet in closed session.  It lists no provision that allows a closed meeting for the item as it was worded on the agenda.

EPISD–payroll

May 29, 2017

Word reached us that EPISD is changing its payroll policies next year.

Our understanding is that currently if you do work from the 1st to the 15th of the month you get paid two weeks later at the end of the month.

If we heard correctly EPISD plans to change the two week delay to a three week delay next year.

It looks like that will save the district one whole week of payroll expense.

Stand back and watch the reaction from the employees.

We deserve better
