The Times takes the weekend off

September 1, 2016

The Monday, August 29, 2016 “A” section of the El Paso Times was an example of how little local content the newspaper offers.

Juan Gabriel had died the day before and the front page had two articles written by local reporters.

There were no other local articles in the entire section.  Instead there were five from the Associated Press and two from USA Today.  Even the editorial was written by USA Today, not the local editorial staff.

When companies that are considering relocation to El Paso look at quality of life, local newspapers are part of what they look at.

Racist or nationalistic?

August 30, 2016

Lou Holtz was recently fired from a future speaking engagement at a Cathedral high school fundraiser.

According to an article in the Times “He endorsed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump …”.

The Times wrote that he also said immigrants needed to assimilate better.

Evidently while speaking at a luncheon he said “I don’t want to speak your language, I don’t want to celebrate your holidays, I sure as hell don’t want to cheer for your soccer team”.

Many of us see those words as an expression of nationalism.

Evidently some Cathedral alumni considered Holtz’s remarks to be racist.  The Times wrote two editorials criticizing the comments.

Many of us would say the same thing about Turkey, Germany, France, or any other county for that matter.  Residents of those countries would probably say the same thing about the United States.

Why is it that anything that anyone says about some individual or group that is less than positive is now labelled racist?

Lost, either geographically or morally

August 29, 2016

I did not read the article in the Times about their new president when it was first published.

The article quoted their new president as saying:  “As a native Texas who has spent my entire life in the Southwest …”.

They then told us that she has been in Harlingen, Texas since 2012.  Before that she was in San Antonio for nine years, and before that she was in Dallas for 25 years.  She also has worked in Oklahoma City.

Revisionist

I guess that we will continue to see the Times modify the content of their pieces to support their editorial position.

Most of us will agree that neither Harlingen, San Antonio, Dallas, nor Oklahoma City are part of the southwest.

If the problem is that she is geographically impaired we offer this map in an effort to try to inform her:

southwest

If she just wanted to mislead us we say “Welcome to the Times, you will fit right in”.

More hypocrisy from the Times

August 27, 2016

The Times continues to show its hypocrisy through its editorial the other day.

They want us to agree that our elected officials at the county  should be paid much more than they are now.

El Chuqueno did a nice job challenging the Times the other day.

Can we get the Times to divulge the salaries of their reporters?  While we’re at it maybe we could talk them into bringing back to El Paso the jobs that they have exported to other cities.

Then again maybe if they had their editorial content managed somewhere else we would end up with a newspaper that advocated for their readers.

Official oppression?

August 10, 2016

The Times printed an Associated Press article the other day about a Texas county that is suing an individual citizen for complaining about one of their policies.

The citizen has complained to Waller county (near Houston) that they have no right to ban firearms in the entire Waller county courthouse.

Texas law evidently prohibits guns from being carried by citizens into courtrooms and related offices, but not the remainder of the building.  The Texas attorney general agrees that guns cannot be prohibited from an entire courthouse.

That is evidently not the answer that the Waller county district attorney wants.  He has sued the citizen individually.  According to the article he said “he’s simply seeking a ruling by a state judge that the county has the legal right to ban guns from the entire courthouse building”.

The suit seeks $100,000 in damages but the district attorney “promised that the county would not pursue any monetary damages”.

Hooey

The district attorney evidently said that the monetary claim was included as boilerplate language.   If they don’t want the money why did they ask for it?  Could it be another way to try to intimidate the citizen?

A law is passed by the legislature.  The state attorney general was asked to give his opinion about the limits of the law.  He did.  The county did not like the ruling.  A citizen complained.

Now the citizen has been sued by the county for complaining that the county was following neither the state law nor respecting the attorney general’s interpretation of it.

The citizen now has to spend money to defend himself against these thugs.

This distict attorney needs to be corrected.
