The Times loses again

May 2, 2014

According to this article in the electronic version of the El Paso Times our El Paso Chihuahuas beat the Fresno Grizzlies in the first game ever played in the new ball park.

The Chihuahuas unfortunately lost and so did the Times.

They want us to buy their electronic editions but do not seem to care about fundamental things like accuracy and truth.

Do they have any sense of responsibility left?

Play ball

April 28, 2014

Our new ball park is scheduled to open today.

There will be difficulties.  The contract to build the facility does not require completion before the end of August.  Parts of the ball park are not finished but are not necessary to have a game.

Traffic and parking will be problems that hopefully the authorities can learn how to handle.

I agree with the mayor.  Many of us do not agree with how we got here.  However if the  venture is not a success we will end up paying much more than we think we will pay now.

In a few months the city should be finished with most of the project.  At that point in time the voters should be able to look at the bills to learn more about the costs incurred just because some people wanted to have a new city hall.  I may be wrong but I don’t believe that the sports team owners had to have the facility where it is or that it had to be completed for playing this year.  I still think that this was all about forcing the city hall issue.

The Times does not seem to be able to decide whether the ball park is a 72 million dollar project or if it is a 74 million dollar project.

It is neither.  One of these days we will start to learn about all of the costs.  The city has done much in the areas around the ball park that they are not talking about.  My uneducated guess at this point is that those costs will exceed 25 million dollars.

From all that I can see we now have a first class facility.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could say the same about our local government?

Ball park opening delayed according to the Times

April 19, 2014

According to this picture’s caption in the El Paso Times our ball park will open May 12, 2014.

27days

The caption says “This aerial shows the portion of the new Southwestern University Park that has had the field turf installed. With twenty-seven days until opening night work is continuing on the ballpark around the clock.”

The article was posted April 15, 2014.

it is hard to believe what I read in the Times.

EPISD cuts

April 16, 2014

The El Paso Independent School District superintendent wrote a guest column for the El Paso Times that was published last Sunday.

Enrollment is declining at the district and thus state and federal funding is being reduced.

He mentioned teacher cuts and other changes that are being considered.  He asked for community input and pledged to “continue to learn and listen”.

Suggestions

There are a myriad of reasons why many things at the district seem to be inefficient from a cost perspective.  Rather than talk about the bloat that is caused by mandates (or the way the district chooses to interpret them), let me offer some suggestions that are within our control.

  • Don’t spend the $57 million from the 2007 bond issue just because you have the money.  The voters approved that money for a new high school.  As it turns out we don’t need one.  Save the money and the interest.
  • Don’t build a new central administration facility.  EPISD staff estimates currently indicate that this will be a $40 million project.  Work with the city to stay where you are.  Let the voters know if city council forces this spending on us.
  • Quit spending money to have unique designs for each school.
  • Maintain your buildings so that they last.  Quit neglecting maintenance until it costs less to replace a school than fix it.

CBP thanks you

April 15, 2014

The City of El Paso signed an agreement with the U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) organization at the end of January of this year.

The plan was to use $1.5 million of city money to fund overtime pay for customs officers in order to shorten waiting time at our international bridges.

The Times quoted the the CBP port director as saying:

“The goal is to get the wait times down to 15 minutes and no more than 30 minutes. We can’t go out and guarantee that. But the goal is to keep the wait times low and manageable.”

And the answer is

The folks over at Newspapertree.com post a “bridge wait times” section on their home page.

The CBP reported numbers for April 12, 2014 at 3:41 PM show the wait time at the Cordova bridge (aka Bridge of the Americas and free bridge) to be 50 minutes.

The user submitted passenger data section shows a 117 minute wait at 7:15 AM on the same day and 127 minutes at 12:49 PM.
